Placemats

In my previous post I showed my ongoing project. The squares are just 2.5 x 2.5"...that is 6.5 x 6.5 cm. What I am doing here is making a set of 6 placemats that will match this runner that I had previously made for my mother in law. I am not sure if it's going to be too overwhelming with so much patchwork (as my husband critically suggested) but the thing is I like it like this. I like mixing squares of different fabrics within the same color palette. And it's fun to play with the fabrics I already have.

En el post previo mostre el trabajo que estoy haciendo ahora. Los cuadrados sond e 2.5 x 2.5"...que es 6.5 x 6.5 cm. Lo que estoy haciendo es un set de 6 mantelitos individuales que peguen con este centro de mesa que le hice a mi suegra. No estoy segura de si va a ser demasiado con tanto patchwork (como mi marido me ha sugerido) pero la cosa es que me gusta asi. Me gusta mezclar cuadrados de diferentes telas pero del mismo color en diferentes tonos. Y es divertido "jugar" con telas que tengo por casa.

Lately my son is taking short and fewer naps than usual. This makes it hard to do crafts and also to write in this blog. Right now he is sleeping and that's why I'm here ;). I know its going to get even more difficult as he grows older, but I will have to plan my day better because I enjoy both crafting and blogging a lot.

Ultimamente mi hijo esta haciendo siestas mas cortas y menos frecuentes de lo normal. Esto complica las cosas a la hora de hacer manualidades y de escribir en este blog. Ahora esta durmiendo y por eso estoy aqui;) Y se que va a ser aun mas dificil segun vaya creciendo, pero tendre que planear mis dias mejor porque esto de hacer manualidades y de escribir en el blog me encanta.

New blog, new machine

As she mentioned there we have decided to start a common blog, which I am designing now. Hopefully we will have it up and running soon. We are still debating about a name for it, any suggestions?

Como menciono hemos decidido empezar un blog comun, que estoy disenhando ahora. Espero que lo tengamos funcionando pronto. Estamos aun decidiendo el nombre del blog, alguna sugerencia?

And it was Sunday again

Today like every Sunday, I got together with my friends. It is such a wonderful feeling talking about crafts, ideas and sharing things with all these wonderful friends, that I feel much more inspired everytime I come back home. Since I took a bit of a break last week I have slowed down crafting, but after today I feel like starting all those new projects that are running around my head...dolls, placemats, aprons, more quilts, bags, drawings, collages, stencils...all those things are runnning around my head like potential things to make in the near future.

Hoy como cada domingo me he juntado con mis amigas. Es tan agradable juntarnos a hablar de trabajos manuales, ideas y compartir cosas con ellas, que me siento mucho mas inspirada cada vez que vuelvo a casa. Como me tome un descansito la semana pasada me he relajado un poco en esto de los trabajos manuales, pero despues de la reunion hoy me apetece empezar todos los proyectos que estan rondando mi cabeza...munhecos, mantelitos individuales, delantales, mas quilts, bolsos, bolsas, dibujos, collages...todas esas cosas andan por mi cabeza como cosas que posiblemente empezare en un futuro proximo.

My sister in law asked me to make her a quilt. She bought a wall hanging from India with an elephant on it. The initial idea was to put that in the center of the quilt and work around it with similar colors. But that piece of fabrics was dry clean only, so we figured it was better to leave it as a wall hanging and then I could make a quilt according to those colors. We found these fabrics and she asked me to make the quilt that is explained in the instructions. I am not sure if I like to follow those instructions or if I should just make up my own design...I have to give it a thought. Anyways, there is no hurry with this one.

Mi cunhada me ha pedido que le haga un edredon. Compro un tapiz indio con un elefante. Al principio pensamos en poner ese tapiz en el centro y coser alrededor con telas de colores similares. Pero ese tapiz era solo de limpieza en seco y decidimos que seria mejor dejar el tapiz en la pared y hacer un edredon con colores adecuados para que pegara bien. Encontramos estas telas y me pidio que se la hiciera siguiendo las instrucciones que vienen. No estoy muy segura de si me gustan las instrucciones o de si prefiero inventarme yo el disenho...tengo que pensarlo un poco mas. Bueno, de todos modos no hay prisas con este edredon.

About time to catch up

I am back home and I'm having a cleaning frenzy, so I figured I better continue cleaning while it lasts because I am also in the mood for throwing away things that either I never use or I don't have space for. I usually tend to keep stuff just in case and I have clothes that I remember buying back in 1995...of course most of those clothes are never touched but back on the day I liked them and I felt good with them. But it's time to change and really get rid of most of those forgotten items. I feel better clearing my house a bit. I am also trying to keep it really clean from the leaves and mulch that jump daily from my porch because my son soon will be crawling and then I will be in trouble.

Acabo de volver a casa y estoy como loca limpiando, asi que creo que sera mejor que continue haciendolo mientras me dure porque tambien me ha dado por tirar cosas que nunca uso o para las que no tengo espacio suficiente. Suelo guardar cosas por si acaso y tengo ropas que recuerdo haberlas comprado en 1995...por supuesto casi todas esas ropas estan sin tocar guardadas pero en su dia me gustaban y me sentia bien poniendomelas. Pero ya es hora de cambiar y de deshacerme de todas esas cosas olvidadas. Me siento mejor quitando cosas de en medio por mi casa. Tambien estoy intentando mantenerla limpia de hojas y cortezas de arboles que saltan todos los dias desde el porche a casa porque mi hijo pronto empezara a gatear y entonces va a ser un lio.

Spiderman

Ok. If you're wondering where was I, well where am I, why am I not blogging lately...the answer is..I'm on vacations. We travelled to South Carolina to see family and friends and to show off our baby, most importantly. The weather is nice and cool here compared to Florida and we are enjoying ourselves. I got to go fabrics shopping today so I am totally happy now. I also get plenty of arms willing to take care of my baby so I have had time to quilt.

Ok. Si os estais preguntando donde estaba, bueno donde estoy, porque no estoy escribiendo en el blog ultimamente...la respuesta es..que estoy de vacaciones. Hemos venido a Carolina del Sur a ver a familiares y amigos y lo mas importante, a ensenhar a nuestro bebe. El clima aqui es mas fresquito y agradable que en Florida y lo estamos disfrutando. hoy fui a comprar telas asi que ya estoy feliz del todo. Tambien tengo muchos brazos con ganas de ocuparse de mi bebe asi que he tenido tiempo de coser.

Aqui esta uno de los descubrimientos que hecho por esta casa. Mi suegra compro este spiderman que es una marioneta de dedo para mi hijo, que gracioso eh? tiene pies y todo!

Meet Pirri

This is Pirri. He is swimming in the lake outside my home (not caused by Alberto, it wasn't bad after all). He is made of felt and has a rattle, a flower and a pompom. This will be given to a 2 year old. I hope she likes it...

Este es Pirri. Esta nadando en el lago de fuera de mi casa (que no fue causado por Alberto, que no ha sido tan malo despues de todo). Esta hecho de fieltro y tiene un cascabel, una flor y un ponpon. Sera regalado a una ninha de 2 anhos. Espero que le guste...

New skin

I got new skin! I am talking about my new blog look. I have been playing with the look of my blog for a long time but until now I couldn't figure out how to personalize it. Today I finally did, I used one of my fabrics for the background and changed colors. I hope you like it, it's more me....

It looks like tropical storm Alberto will be visiting us tomorrow so there is no hope to get some sunlight and take any good picture. And because I have been working on this all afternoon (or rather when my baby didn't need to be entertained), I am going to post the pictures of my new bag right now. It's basically the same as the one I made on Saturday but this time using upholstery fabrics.
Parece que la tormenta tropical Alberto nos estara visitando manhana, asi que no creo que haya esperanzas de que salga el sol y pueda hacer ninguna buena foto. Y porque he estado trabajando en esto toda la tarde (cuando me dejaba mi bebe) voy a poner las fotos de mi nuevo bolso ahora mismo. Es mas o menos igual que el bolso que hice el sabado pero esta vez usando telas de tapizar.

New bag

On Saturday I was reading blogs early in the morning when I run into this post. I remembered those beautiful bags that tiny happy made not long ago and I was dying to make one like that. I looked around the web for the pattern but I couldn’t find anything similar. I even looked in the stores but nothing that had that similar shape. So when I saw that tiny happy had made a tutorial for it I was sooo happy! I grabbed these tea towels I found in a shop the other day and I started working until I finished it that night.
El Sabado etaba leyendo blogs temprano y me encontre con este post. Recorde esos bolsos tan bonitos que habia hecho tiny happy hace poco y que tenia muchas ganas de hacer. Busque por internet el patron pero no encontre nada similar. Incluso busque en tiendas pero no habia nada que se pareciera. Asi que cuando vi que tiny happy habia hecho una explicacion de como hacerlas me flipe! Compre estas toallas de cocina en una tienda el otro dia y empece a hacer el bolso hasta que lo acabe por la noche.

And today we had a wonderful Sunday meeting with my crafty friends. As Gisele says, we had a show and tell of our crafty projects and it was wonderful. We also talked about everything and enjoy some delicious desserts. Too bad that next weekend I won't be around because I am looking forward for this time of the week. It is so much fun.
Y hoy tuvimos una reunion fantastica con mis amigas. Como dice Gisele, nos ensenhamos y hablamos de nuestros proyectos y hablamos de todo ademas de disfrutar de postres riquisimos. Que pena que el proximo fin de semana no voy a estar aqui porque estoy deseando llegar a las 4 de la tarde de los domingos. Que divertido ha sido.

Meet Lulu

This weekend has been very productive for me. I have started 3 new things and almost finished them. I know I said I was going to finish several quilts I've been working on for a long time, and that's still my plan but I get distracted with new stuff so easily...and I always have an excuse to make something for someone new...anyways, meet Lulu, my new Minimoopy for a 4 month old baby. I realize babies love this minimoopies because they can chew on the legs, arms and ears easily, at least my son does...

Este fin de semana ha sido muy productivo. He empezado 3 cosas y casi las he acabado. Ya se que dije que iba a acabar varios edredones que llevo haciendo hace mucho tiempo, y ese aun es mi plan pero esque me distraigo con cosas nuevas con una facilidad...y siempre tengo una excusa para hacer algo para alguien nuevo...bueno, conocer a Lulu, mi nuevo Minimoopy para un ninho de 4 meses. Me he dado cuenta de que a los bebes les encantan los minimoopies porque pueden morder las piernas, brazos y orejas con facilidad, por lo menos eso es lo que hace mi hijo...

Surprise in the mail

I was really excited because I knew it was June's coloriffic swap-o-rama. You never know what are you want to get and in some cases even if you are getting anything! (sometimes there are dishonest people around the internet) so when I saw such a beautiful package I was so happy.

Estaba emocionada porque sabia que era el paquete de Junio de coloriffic swap-o-rama. Nunca sabes lo que te va a llegar y en algunos casos si te va a llegar algo! (a veces hay gente que no es honesta en internet) asi que cuando vi este paquete tan bonito me puse feliz.

I got it from Fisk and fern, really from Fisk, a woman from Brooklyn, NY that likes to make stationary and sells it over at Etsy. The contents of the package include: Two wonderful fabrics, 3 gelly pens, 3 sets of buttons, a coin pocket, nivea creme, nail polish, two whistle candy that is actually manufactured in Spain, my home country! (made me extra happy), some mint gum, the cool stationary, a nice inspirational book with black and white pictures, 5 rolls of thread of different tones of blue and grey and a cool postcard from Brooklyn in black and white. Lucky me!

Lo recibi de Fisk and fern, bueno en realidad de Fisk, una mujer de Brooklyn, NY a la que le gusta hacer y vender tarjetas en Etsy. El contenido de este paquete incluye: Dos telas chulisimas, 3 boligrafos de colores, 3 paquetitos con botones, un bolsito para monedas, crema nivea, laca de unhas, dos caramelos de silbato que estan hechos en Espanha, mi pais de origen! (eso me ha dado aun mas alegria), chicle de menta, tarjetas chulisimas hechas por ella, un librito para inspirarme con fotos en blanco y negro, 5 rollos de hilo de colores azules y gris y una postal muy bonita de Brooklyn en blanco y negro. But this month I am also in the mood for "finish what you have" (Turkey Feathers' idea), so I am going to try not to start any major thing...let's see if I can make it...I have plenty of work to do. Today I am starting to hand quilt a quilt I have assembled. That's a good start.

Pero este mes yo tambien estoy con ganas de "acabar lo que tienes" (idea de Turkey Feathers), asi que voy a intentar no empezar ninguna cosa grande...a ver si lo consigo...tengo mucho que hacer. Hoy he empezado a hacer la parte de quilting a mano de un edredon que hoy he montado. Es un buen principio.

Sundays get together

I am lucky here to know a bunch of girls that enjoy quilting, sewing and related things like me and that happen to live close to my apartment. As I've mentioned before I started quilting in a hand quilting class taught at one of the University villages and I got to meet a lot of other women who loved doing this too. That was in 2004 and then we took the class again in 2005 just to hang out with these wonderful women. When the class finished we continued hanging out every Sunday for 2h at someone's home. It is fun to get together, see each other's projects and talk even thought most of the time we don't get much work done. Yesterday we got together again at a friend's house. We were two Chilean friends, a friend from Togo, my friend from Brazil, another one from Portugal, another one from Argentina who is not into crafts but enjoys the chit chat and me, from Spain. It was sooooo nice! We shared our projects and got inspired by one another. Too bad we didn't bring our camera to show you all their amazing work. Well, here is a picture of that class I took in 2004 with the top of a quilt I made for my little sister. It was my first big hand stitched and hand quilted quilt. I don't have a pictured of the finished quilt, I am not sure why, but hopefully one day my sister will send me a good picture so I can post it here...

Tengo la fortuna de conocer a un grupo de chicas a las que les gusta hacer edredones, quilting, coser y cosas por el estilo como a mi y resulta que viven cerca de mi apartamento. Como ya he mencionado antes empece a coser edredones en una clase de quilting a mano que fue enseñada en una de las villas de la Universidad y donde tuve la ocasion de conocer a muchas otras mujeres a las que tambien le encantaba todo esto. Eso fue en 2004 y entonces tomamos otra clase de nuevo en 2005 solo para juntarme con este grupo tan guay de mujeres. Cuando la clase acabo continuamos juntandonos los domingos por 2h en una de nuestros apartamentos. Es muy divertido juntarnos, ver los proyectos de los demas y hablar aunque la mayoria del tiempo no hacemos mucho. Ayer nos juntamos de nuevo en la casa de una amiga. Eramos dos amigas chilenas, una amiga de Togo, mi amiga de Brasil, otra de Portugal, otra de Argentina que no esta en lo de las manualidades pero a la que le gusta socializar y yo, de España. Estuvo tannnn bien! Nos enseñamos nuestros proyectos y nos inspiramos las unas a las otras. Una pena que no nos acordaramos de traer una camara para enseñaros esas cosas tan chulas que hicieron las demas. Bueno, ahi va una foto de esa clase que hice en el 2004 con la parte de arriba del edredon que hice para mi hermana pequeña. Fue mi primer edredon grande hecho a mano, tanto la parte de coser las piezas como la de hacer el quilting. No tengo una foto del edredon acabado, no se porque, pero espero que algun dia mi hermana me mande una buena foto para ponerla aqui…

Minimoopy and whiplash

I am going to make this one short because my sister says I write too much. I got the minimoopy pattern from Moopy and me, an Australian designer with really cool patterns. They are easy and I really like them. I made two so far (Clavel with yellow face and Dulcie with brown face):

Voy a ser corta porque mi hermana dice que me enrollo mucho. Consegui el patron del minimoopy de Moopy and me, una disenhadora Australiana que tiene disenhos muy chulos. Son faciles y me encantan. Ya he hecho dos (Clavel con cara amarilla y Dulcie con cara marron):






And some good news! I got awarded the final prize of the Wiplash competition as an overall result of all my entries!! yipiiii!!! I am sharing this prize with Moki. I also got special mention on week 6!! I'm so happy :)

Y buenas noticias! Consegui el premio final del concurso Wiplash como premio a todas mis participaciones en general!!! yupiii! Estoy compartiendo el premio con Moki. Tambien recibi mencion especial en la sexta semana. Estoy feliz :)

Discovering new blogs

Lately I have been running into very interesting blogs that I had never seen before. Usually when you visit a crafter’s blog you see the same names in the “favorites” or “blogs I read”. I guess most of these wonderful bloggers have created a reputation for themselves by continuously make beautiful things, are creative and inspirational, so we all love them and follow their blogs rigorously. However, there are also many blogs that are not so well known, probably most of us (I include myself in this pool) are fairly new in this world and not so many people knows about us. Anyways, I have found thanks mainly to the comments that I receive in my posts very interesting blogs. Some of them are in Spanish but many others in English. I just wanted to dedicate this post this group by mentioning some of my discoveries.
Ultimamente he encontrado algunos blogs muy interesantes que nunca habia visto antes. Normalmente cuando visitas un blog de alguien en este mundillo siempre encuentras a los mismos nombres de blogs entre mis “favoritos” o “los blogs que leo”. Creo que la mayoria de estas bloggers maravillosas se han creado una buena reputacion haciendo cosas peciosas, creando e inspirando a las demas, asi que a todas nos gustan y probablente leemos sus blogs rigurosamente. Pero por otro lado, tambien hay muchos otros blogs que no son tan conocidos, probablemente la mayoria (entre los cuales me incluyo) somos bastante nuevas en el tema y no mucha gente sabe de nosotras. Algunos de los que yo leo estan en Español pero muchos otros estan en Ingles. Solo queria dedicar este post a este grupo mencionando mis descubrimientos.

Today I found “Viento del Este, viento del Oeste”, a blog in Spanish about multiple things among others, crafts and random stuff, she mentions a lot of other interesting blogs and links, so it’s a great resource to spend your whole day hooked in front of the computer. Another one also by a Spaniard but this one is in English “Finished objects”, with instructions about knitting patterns, not that I can use any of that with my zero knitting knowledge but anyways…from the Netherlands ”Kisskus”, I think she makes many things that are my style, things that I would make, like that patchwork bunny, I can put patchwork everywhere :) One blog that I read every single day from my friend Gisele, ”Quilts, crafts and things”. She makes a lot of beautiful things, and talks about not only crafts in her blog but about other interesting things that happen around her life. She is my number one motivator too. Another one that I like to read is ”Woof nanny”. She is very creative too and likes to post interesting crafts and things in her blog that she finds in the web. Another one I like is Dacia’s. Her blog ”Dacia Ray”, like she calls it, a blog that reminds girls how to be girls and a site about crafts and recipes. Other blog in Spanish ”¿Vivir para tejer o tejer para vivir?” I haven’t had much time to explore it yet but it looks like it’s about knitting mainly. Another creative spirit, "African Kelli”, she makes really wonderful crafts and also has very interesting things to say. And I am sure I am missing many more that I frequently visit, I will have to continue posting more about this group soon. Now I have to read some more blogs before my polvoron de limon wakes up. Hoy encontre “Viento del Este, viento del Oeste”, un blog en Español sobre varias cosas, entre otras, manualidades y cosas variadas, ella suele mencional otros blogs y links interesantes, asi que es un recurso muy bueno para pasarte el dia entero delante del ordenador. Otro tambien de una española pero escrito en Ingles “Finished objects”, con instrucciones sobre como tejer cosas, no quiere decir qe yo lo use porque no tengo ni idea de como tejer pero bueno….de Holanda ”Kisskus”, creo que ella hace cosas muy similares a las que yo haria, como el conejito de pedazos de tela o patchwork, yo pongo patchwork en todas partes :) Un blog que y oleo a diario es el de mi amiga Gisele, ”Quilts, crafts and things”. Ella hace muchas cosas bonitas, y habla no solo de manualidades sino tambien de otras cosas interesantes en su vida. Ella es mi motivadora numero uno. Otro que me gusta leer es ”Woof nanny”. Ella tambien es muy creativa y le gusta escribir sobre manualidades interesantes y cosas en su blog que encuentra por internet. Otro que me gusta es el de Dacia. Su blog blog ”Dacia Ray”, como ella dice, es un blog que recuerda a las chicas como ser chicas y es un lugar de manualidades y recetas. Otro blog en Español ”¿Vivir para tejer o tejer para vivir?” que no he tenido mucho tiempo de explorarlo aun pero parece que sobretodo de tejer. Otro espiritu creativo, "African Kelli”, ella hace unas manualidades maravillosas y tambien tiene muchas cosas interesante que decir. Y estoy segura de que me faltan muchos mas que suelo visitar, tendre que continuar en otro momento sobre este grupo. Ahora tengo que leer mas blogs antes de que mi polvoron de limon se despierte.
