Happy Monday

Today it's Monday and I am full of energy to start this week.
I got good news this morning too. My first publication in a scientific peer review journal has been accepted with minor revisions. That means I should be able to have it ready for publication pretty soon. I have been waiting for this since January, so it's a great relief.

Yesterday our quilting group got together again. We have some new members and the girls have been really active! Always new projects, good food and good chats. We will get a post soon at Minerva's circle, along with a good recipe of a merengue cake that Pilar prepare...mmmm...so good!.

Updates...my digital camera is not broken, actually it never was! It was the new batteries that were failing, and a set of new batteries fixed the problem. I am happy about that, I felt really lost without a camera...ah! I won a price in Whiplash thanks to this cocktail purse! and so did my friend Gisele! That was a highlight of last week! And about my projects, I am almost done with my wristlet and also with this pink baby quilt. I hope to be more productive this week though.
Also one of our neighbours just went to Japan today, to Kyoto. I lend him my travel guide and told him about Kyoto, one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to. Oh! So many good memories came back to me! I spent 3 years in Japan and I got to travel 4 times to Kyoto-Osaka-Nara area. I have fond memories of all those trips, because the first time I went with the Japanese language class, the second time, with my cousin (mom of Noah) and I had to be the interpreter, and belive me, I wasn't so good in Japanese back then! Then I went again with my sister and her husband and then again with my parents. It was different in every ocasion, and special in all. I so want to go back there one day! And bring my baby to show him the country where I met his daddy. Maybe later on, when he can apreciate it better. And here is what I have hanging next to my computer/craft desk, a fabrics of Japanese women making quilts. Why wasn't I so crafty back when I was living in Japan??? I would have spent all my money in Japanese books and cute stuff! Oh well, I have to go back.

Do I like it...or not?

I have finished one of the placemats I started a few weeks ago. It become really puffy and my quilting style is kind of crazy. I was just experimenting using a walking foot (didn't do it right the first time and was shaking the sewing machine like crazy, then I used the wrong stitch and broke my needle and I bent the automatic threader...mmmm....not good). Well the machine didn't break at least, it looks like it's fine now, the foot too (don't worry Gisele). Now, do I like how the placemat looks? I am not sure..not much at the beginning and now it's growing on me a bit more. Maybe tomorrow I will look at it with different eyes. I am still debating if I should do all of them the same way or if I should continue experimenting. I am going to think that through with my pillow tonight.

This is what I was up to on Sunday. And I have also started cutting the fabrics for my wristlet swap! yeah! I am excited about that one.
Ole! Estoy contenta con ese proyecto.

Meet Patricia

It seems that lately most of the people around me are finishing their PhD. Most of us came at the same time and after 4.5-5.5 years everybody seem to finish. I finished one month before my baby was born, that was my great motivation. It was perfect timing, I was so glad to have all my time to spend just with him instead of with my papers! Actually I still have a couple of papers to work on, but it's in a much more relaxed way.

One of my friends (the one getting the brown bag) came at the same time as me but she wasn't lucky at all with her advisors. It's amazing how some people want to make your life difficult and make you suffer for no clear reason. Science sometimes is like this, there are a lot of people with huge egoes and that think about graduate students as slaves. It's bad. I hope she can make it and finish soon. We will have a big party to celebrate it, she deserves it.

My sister is also finishing but she is also having a baby soon. She changed projects several times and location so it's been hard, and now it seems that she is always working very hard trying to get most of this done before my I'm-sure-beautiful niece is born. She is very close to the end, hopefully we will be both phd stay-home moms. I'm looking forward to that so she can start using her sewing machine some more.

My husband is also in the same boat, now realizing that the deadlines are right around the corner. Let's see how this end of the year goes. Looking forward to Christmas in Spain.

And finally, my last doll, following Hillary's bunny pattern from the put together pattern booklet #1. It was very easy and fast. Meet Patricia. She has cute shoes.
Conoce a Patricia. Tiene unos zapatitos muy bonitos.

Bag # 3, more stuffies to make and camera crisis

Ok, the title of this post tells it all. I have finished my bag # 3 following the tutorial by tiny happy. Super easy and beautiful results. This one is for my friend who loved my bag when she saw it. The problem I have with this bag is that I bought a denim type fabric for the lining and even though it looks pretty good, my fingers were turning blue as I was assembling...agggrrrr!!! I am not sure if it's going to make everything blue! Should I wash it or put it in water with vinergar to fix the colors?? I am just afraid that the brown part (made also with kitchen towels) will get messed up...anyways, I hope she likes it...I made a pocket for the cell phone too.

I also got this in the mail a couple of days ago...time to start a new softie.

And the bad news are that my digital camera is not working anymore, it shows like its working and when you are getting ready to take a picture it says no battery and it goes off...even with new batteries....so I had to take these not so nice pictures with my camcorder.

Welcome to the world, Noah

My little nefew Noah (not Nils as I thought!!!) was born today in Sweden. I am so happy! We didn't even know that it was going to be a boy although that's what I thought. We are very excited about his arrival and looking forward to see his pictures with his parents.
And this is just a corner of what's going all the way to Sweden, one of these days. When I finish it...

Ahhh! update!!!
My friend also had her baby Julia!! What a surprise! These babies came earlier! I better get back to finishing her quilt...I am double super excited today, so many good news!
Ahhh! Algo nuevo!!!

Baby quilts

Last week when I got my new sewing machine I decided to start those two baby quilts that I am planning to give to two new babies that will be born soon. I was very happy when I found such colorful fabrics a couple of months ago so I just needed to figure out the design, and since they were so colorful I decided they would be unisex. As time went by I found out one of those babies was going to be a boy and the other one a girl. I thought it would be nice to make the same quilt with just a different base color to see how different they look. This is what I came up with:

Now I have to figure ot the backing and then I will do some quilting with my machine for the very first time...let's see how that goes. I don't have a walking foot so I am not sure if it will work without it, but I have to give it a try. I was experimenting last night with the free hand quilting motion but it was quite a disaster, I think that is a very difficult thing to do because since it's hard to control de speed in which you move your fabrics, the stitch lenght varies quite a bit. Maybe as I get better at this I will be able to do it, but not now...

Cocktail purse

whipup

This is my entry for the Whiplash competition over at Whip up. I decided to make a cocktail purse. I call it like that because it is just a small size purse that I would take to a cocktail with the minimum things one girl needs, in my case, my glasses and maybe my keys, but others may want to put also their cell phones and lipstick.
I like the way it turned out with the ruffles in the front and the decorative stiches in the back (using my new sewing machine!). It's a quilted purse and I spent a lot of time making its little details, therefore I guess this should go into the FANCY category. I am happy with the final result. Now I want to go to a cocktail party!

.

Details front: ruffles and quilting.
Detalles de alante: adornos, acolchado.

Stitches in the back:
Puntadas de atras:

Details: Pocket inside, closure and hooks for the handle.

Minerva's circle

We started our "friend's blog" a week ago. And this week we are starting to see post from the different girls in our group. Go check Minerva's circle to see the wonderful quilts they made or are making! Really beautiful!

Even though today is not Friday (following the WIP(work in progress) theme that many crafty bloggers follow, I would like to show my work in progress today. A new baby quilt. Actually I will try to make to similar ones at the same time. This is just how I cut the fabrics and how I organized them and labeled them so that I wouldn't go crazy with the complicated puzzle that I have created as a pattern.

This is how it would look when I put the strips together, but I am thinking to add stripes of solid colors in between so it is not so busy. What do you think?

Meet Julia

I got so excited the other day starting this embroidered doll, that even though it was looking kind of chubby I decided to continue and make a nice baby present for a soon-to-be-born baby girl. I found out several things that I would like to improve for the next time but in general I was satisfied with the final result. She has a gingle bell inside and that lovely ribbon that I bought online not long ago.

Jumping up and down

That's how I was last night after I finished this:

As I previously mentioned, I signed up to the wristlet swap that Kelli organized. I wanted to try first doing a pouch to see how it comes out, because I have never put a zipper with a sewing machine and on top of that I am getting familiarized with my new sewing machine. I used Thimble's wonderful tutorial.

I made that pouch for someone to put his table tennis balls in. That is also the stencil I did with the freezer paper.

I am ready to rock!

Oh I am so happy!! I finally got my new sewing machine...

And fortunatelly I had the placemats cut and ready to sew so I could try it. It is awsome! So easy with a machine that works like silk...I am going to start making more things just to be able to use it :)

I also got to chat with my friend today, she is having a baby and oh!! to my surprise it's one month earlier than I thought!! And I have so many projects in my mind for that little baby girl! Good that I am almost done with my embroidered doll. I like how it's coming out. More about that coming soon.

Taking over embroidery

Before I continue with my projects, as I said I would last month...the "finish what you have" month...I decided to take over another new thing, something I had never tried before, embroidery. I love learning new stitches, and I have this wonderful book about how to make doll clothes where all these different stitches are explained. Remembering this post by Hillary I decided to make this:

But as you can see the stitches are too thick and she looks kind of fat. So I made a stop here and decided to see if I can do it thinner like she did. I think I got it:

Asi que he parado aqui y he decidido a ver si lo puedo hacer mas fino. Creo que lo consegui:

I am still planning on finishing up my chubby doll.

Aun pienso en acabar mi munheca gordita.

Happy Independence Day

Happy 4th of July!
Here is a national holiday, independence day and we celebrated it going to a party last night. We go there every year. It's a huge party at a family's home, friends of my friend who live in front of a beautiful lake. They have an amazing house, but the best part is that they share this evening with hundreds of people. It's a pot luck so we all have to share a dish and then most people play musical instruments, and they gather in the different rooms of the house and even outside to play. As they start playing more people with more instruments join and it is wonderful. At the end of the night there are fireworks in the city that can be viewed perfectly through the lake. We are just expectators but we love it! I wish I knew how to play any kind of instrument.
Maybe my son will one day...he was very entertained as you can see in this picture:

And in honor of this american holiday I made this cool picture with a photo I took of my husband and son (my husband wearing blue and the red stroller of my son who was wearing orange pants). Obviously this is just a portion of the picture that I modified, I streched it following this explanation by Amy. It's so cool!

And my ongoing project, the placemats. Purples and greens are ready to be sewn. Now I need my new sewing machine to arrive!!!

New blog

Today my friends and I have officially launched our new community blog "Minerva's circle". I have posted about our meeting today, at my place, always fun.

On my personal crafty achievements of the week...well I guess I shouldn't say achievements, I have not really done much...other than finishing up sewing a quilt that now needs to be quilted (I won't show that one because it is a surprise) and I have been quilting another one that is just going slow.

Take a look to my next project, a little pouch with this freezer paper stencil. I bought more colors to make more stencils in different fabrics, it's easy and fun.
