Festive table runner

My mother in law asked me once if I could make her a table runner for her dinning room. It took me a long time to make it, and several unfinished tries. It wasn't hard to make, but the hardest part was the design. I usually don't have a design to start with. I just go with the flow and see where it takes me. I know she likes Japanese things because she does have many little figurines in her dinner room from Japan, so I thought I could start from there. I got some squares with dragonflies over ebay, and then I tried to combine those colors with fabrics I already had at home. I also wanted to adapt the fish scale shape I had just leaned in my quilting class and then I managed to do the center part. But it was soooo colorful that I just couldn't decide what fabric to put around it. So I took it to the fabric store and compared fabrics and it was still too hard because it was so colorful! But I finally I found a purple and gold fabric that worked and made it look very festive. Just appropriate for special ocations. I think she really liked it. Here is how it looked:
