African doll

My friends from Minerva's circle and I decided to participate in what it's called Dollies without borders project. In this project, we make handcrafted dolls that represent girls and boys in Africa and also stuffed animals from the countries where they will be sent and then we give them to the lady that organizes all of this and that will take them or make sure they get to orphanages in several countries in Africa.

I made a doll thinking of the woman that I know from West Africa. I think they are tall, slim ad the dresses they wear are very tailored and with a lot of flare, very beautiful. I made a little flamenco style dress, but that is my spanish touch. Even though you can't see it in the pictures the doll also has underwear.

My friends from Mali also gave a couple of nice presents that they brought from their trip to Ethiopia. This is my new outfit. I love it, it is simple but has a nice decoration and it is very comfortable around the house.

They also gave me some beautiful fabric from Mali. Fabric is always welcome, I love it!

Now I'm in Tennessee with my friend Gisele having a great time. More to come...

And this is for my own

Having noticed that Luca loves bags...

...I made him one just like I did for some of his friends, but his has a picture of his mom, dad and himself. I bought these fabrics 1 week after my husband's death, when my friends took me to the fabric shop (JoAnns). I'm glad I finally made it.

Little kiddoes little bags

This week I was in a sewing frenzy, making bags. I have so many kids around in my life that would look so cute with one of those tiny happy bags...so I made tiny bags for all those special children.
For a little two year old boy:

And for 2 other girls:

quilted bag

I just realized that I forgot to post the pictures of this bag that I made to my neighbor and friend that takes with her husband such good care of both of us. It is made with jean fabric and quilted by hand with turquoise thread, lately, my favorite color.

My friend's mom is from China and she reads my blog too. She came to visit her and brought me these beautiful fabrics that she knew for sure I would love them :)

Blood donor

My friend told me that he donates blood every month. My husband needed 50 units of blood to try to save his life. If it weren't for many generous people that do this frequently, that would have complicated things even more. Blood is also incredibly expensive here in the US. But we all have it and it is easy to donate. My blood type is also in big demand, I am universal donor. I think that I am so lucky to be healthy that I should share my blood with someone who is not. Like many people did with my husband. I just wanted to share this because sometimes the obvious doesn't ring a bell in our heads until someone tells us, like my friend did. I am passing the message.

Finding time to do things

How come sometimes it is so difficult to find the time to breathe and still you get this feeling that you didn't accomplish much?...I guess taking care of a 17 month old boy takes every bit of you sometimes and that's why I've been feeling so unproductive lately. I have been starting to paint, and my little sister, only witness of my wanna-be-a-painting liked it. So I guess I feel more encouraged to continue now.

I have to admit that I was productive on our Sunday quilting meeting, for once, I didn't go with my son and I focused on finishing the last side of the border of my mom's quilt. I was silent and concentrated and I liked that, I miss that. I have also had great intentions to craft, sew, knit, crochet, paint, reflected in the number of books that I got from the library. Every time I go there I decide I need to go there every week, I really love that place. Specially with a sleeping baby so I can actually look at books.

Jo como he cambiado.

And continuing with wildlife in Florida, this is what I found when I looked outside of my bedroom window the other day...a hawk with a squirrel....

My second book

The first one was my dissertation. The second one is my blog. Polvoron de limon has become a book thanks to Gisele who made a publication out of my blog as my birthday present. What a wonderful idea and what a beautiful book! She made the editing, rearranging of pictures and pages and choose the colors. It is wonderful. I love it. I like being able to browse so easily though all my creations. Thank you so much Gisele, you are great!

Me encanta. Me gusta que puedo buscar todas mis creaciones tan facilmente. Muchas gracias Gisele, eres fantastica!

Something else I got for my birthday from Pilar, a recipe book. It is so cool, it has patchwork in the cover and of course the colors I just love.

And a bag, the first creation by Hawa, from Mali, the first thing she has ever sewn, incredible! Needles to say, I also love the colors.

After almost 2 wonderful weeks with my sister and nieces, without much time for crafting or anything else, I am back. Now I started with my new hobby, painting. So far it is getting hard, at least the drawing part. As long as they are half as good as my younger sister's amazing paintings, I will be happy.

Ahora he empezado mi nuevo habby, pintura.

Well now that I think about it, I haven't been crafting but I have been creating. We are building a garden in memory of my husband right in front of my apartment. It is a Japanese themed garden, and just with 2 days of work it is already looking amazing. The best part, sharing these moments with friends and family and thinking about McNair. I have also been gardening in my own little front yard, inspired by the initiative of my sister. Thanks sister, you always give me a boost of energy :)

Bueno, ahora que lo pienso, no he estado haciendo manualidades pero si he estado creando.

Birthdays month

This is a month full of birthdays. Starting with mine, it was a wonderful and busy day. Unlike other years, this time I didn't feel like having a big bbq with friends. My husband used to cook for all of us and we used to celebrate it outdoors. This time I was lucky to have my sister and nieces visiting and millions of angels flying around me to wish me a happy day.

Among the many amazing presents I got that day, I received this creative pouch from Gisele to put seed envelopes in it. I haven't used the seeds yet, but as soon as the cold weather leaves they are coming outside.

She also made another one for my mother in law.

Tambien le hizo otro a mi suegra.

A few weeks ago I also got the opportunity to go to the Botanical Gardens to see the stone that had my husband's name engraved. It was beautiful, sad, happy and special. It was in the bamboo walkway. I also saw beautiful flowers and trees...Today is my niece's 5th birthday. Happy birthday Isabelita! These pictures are for you...

Feliz cumpleanhos Isabelita! Estas fotos son para ti...

And to spice up this post, this is what we run into when we were walking by the University lake with our 3 precious babies...pretty scary. I didn't think he was going to come out like did.

A week at the beach

A wonderful week at the beach in the Atlantic coast. Wide, beautiful beach.

Sea shells leaving their prints in the sand.

Sea oats back on the dune protecting civilization.

A farmer's market right along the beach.

Amazing fruts and vegetables.

Frutas y verduras increibles.

A wonderful week overall, hopefully we will repeat this week, at least just for a day.

New projects, new energy

When I don't feel very good I don't find time to do anything. It looks like it is all related. I try to keep busy and to efficiently use my time so that I can do the things that are important to me and also others that even though they don't look all that important, they make me feel good, and therefore they too are important.

These past weeks a lot of things have been happening in my life and Luca's life. We are a busy couple. Go somewhere everyday. We see people everyday. We go play with other kids or have dinner with adults. Non stop. In the midst of this crazy busy life, I feel so good that I get things done around the house and also I get to do some crafting. I talk to my friends often. I talk to Gisele quite a bit. I miss her, and talking on the phone helps. Me and my friends from Minerva's Circle decided to send her a gift. We bought her some fabrics at Trenton's little quilting shop and then I decided to make a bag. I got inspired by a shirt that I have and I love, that used to be owned by two of my sisters. This is what it looked like:

No paramos.

And I finally finished covering one of my chairs, all green. Things are finally starting to match around here.

New stuff

Some months ago I started this bag. I decided to recycle and use something that is not meant to be a bag. I found some nice placemats in the store and I thought this was the perfect color/ thickness for the bag and I think the person who will get it is going to like it...I hope so...

Then I have some many people being so extremely nice to me, showing me what an authentic friendship is all about that of course I want to make bags and bags to all those people. Here is a sneak peak of the next one for a special friend.

And this is how my crochet is progressing...well it did for a while then it stopped there...

And this is my latest adquisition from Joanns...I fell in love with this fabric when I saw it and I had to leave the other 3 I was carrying...now this will become another bag, this time for me.

Is fire the solution to my present life?

You might be wondering what this post title is all about. Well, I am at a point in my life where I still try to comprehend where I am and how I feel. One week ago, just 6 months after my husband’s death, I was sad, I was chronically sad. I was wondering if this was the beginning of a very dark stage of my life. I had not felt like this in a long long time, maybe in 6 months. And as much as I tried not to feel that way, there was no way for me to avoid being sad. I know that a great deal of that was just being tired, my little one with baby troubles, teething, vaccinations, and a single mom getting very tired. Then on Monday I was invited to attend to a prescribed burning. If you are not in any agricultural related field or not interested in forests and things like that you might not know what I'm talking about. Well this is not my field but I sure knew what this was about. Prescribed burns are usually done in order to prevent larger fires, uncontrolled fires and also to allow the natural population of native plants to grow and to establish their habitat without having "foreign" species all over the place. I was one of the members of the ignition crew. I had to cross the forest, with a torch with gasoline inside and pour this burning fuel in a straight line through the forest while I jumped though vines with thorns and scrub and skipped recently planted pine trees. I really didn't know what I was doing, but since my motto is "if others can do it, so can I", I just trusted those who trusted me first and started the ignition looking at those wild flames "walking" slowly towards those who were setting the fire. It was a great deal of physical effort. I am not used to exercise for the longest time, and the torch became really heavy in no time. I was exhausted by the 4th time and I decided I was just going to continue looking and participated extinguishing the fire where it needed to be done.
After that I was a new person. I felt renewed. I felt energized and invigorated. And I wonder why. Was it the fact of being outdoors? Or exercising? Was just the fact that I had fun with really cool people and learned a bunch in just a morning? Was it the break I took from my precious baby? Or was it the fire? My friend assures to me that the fire has these energizing properties. It cleans your soul, just like water. One reason or the other or all combined, the fact is, I am not in that dark phase anymore. Life is good.

Me sentia renovada. Me sentia energizada y envigorizada.

And beacuse life is good, I have been very productive in the crafting department these days. I finished this bag for my friend Pilar, so she can keep her little sewing tools or whatever she likes. I promised to give all the girls at Minerva's circle a class on putting zippers soon. Soon to come.

I am also continuing with the room harmonizing project here at home, so one of my chairs is being covered in green as of right now. Everything is falling in place.

Having fun is easy

Last Sunday when I met with the girls at Minervas circle we organized something that I believe it had been "on the works" while I was back in Spain. We had talked for the longest time about this quilting shop called The Swannee Valley Quilt Shoppe located 45 min away from where we live. We don't have local quilt shops around here because the only one we had was closed last year I believe. We had heard that this shop was huge and that it also had a cafe, so it was a great plan to spend a whole day with my crafting friends.

The diversity of fabrics was amazing, lots of inspiration and I felt the desire to explore colors or patterns that are our of my niche...of course I really didn't get out of it too much, it is hard to not go for the fabrics you have always loved.

From left to right, on top: Claudia, Amisha, Teri (our teacher), Marcela, Michelle, Dineo, Camila, Clara. On the bottom: Pascaline, me, Pilar.
De izquierda a derecha, arriba: Claudia, Amisha, Teri (nuestra profe), Marcela, Michelle, Dineo, Camila, Clara. Abajo: Pascaline, yo, Pilar.

And here is my best crafting buddy, my inspiration and my energy to keep on going. Thinking today of my husband (like every day), after 6 months of his deadly accident.

Catching up

I am finally at home, just with my little one. We need to continue with our lives by ourselves. This sounds like continuing being emotionally stable but actually is much more than that. I have to feel like I am doing the right thing with my son and also feel like I am doing some good for myself. I am planning a lot of activities for children, activities that take us both out of our home and make us distracted. I have also decided that I need to have some changes around my home, simplify my life and organize it a bit. I tend to accumulate stuff all over the place and after a while I feel a bit stressed looking at all the clutter. But it is hard to remove things and put them away or get rid of them.

My living room where I spend so much time is a mess. I have many things that bring me many memories from years back. But everything has all different colors, and it is placed in whatever way we felt like putting, in other words, there is random stuff everywhere and nothing matches at all. I decided to go to some websites and look at tips for decorating a room. I don’t like rooms that look like an interior decorator made them and there are no personal touches anywhere. What I do like is harmony and balance in a room. I decided I have to pick some colors for my room and stick with them. I am sticking with orange and green and of course touches of brown, red and yellow. This is my first attempt to harmonize my room. I took and unattractive picture frame that made this picture of the three of us kind of cheap looking and made a fabric frame for it. I also cut the picture so that it would be centered and also so the focus of the picture would be in our faces rather than the background landscape. I like the fabric, it’s a Japanese fabric I found some time ago, and since I meet my hubby in Japan, I like it even better.

All new beginnings

It is crazy, sad, exciting and confusing at the same time when we have a huge change in our lives and we have to start from zero. My friend Gisele and her family, who have been good friends from the very first semester I spent in this town left. They started a new part of their lives. New job, new town, new appartment, new colleagues and friends. Of course they will keep many of their old friends even thought we will be far away. The world of communications will keep us all connected and the good and intense memories of moments that we shared will always be within each one of us. For me is too a new beginning, after her many other will leave. I will too one day. Me and my son. I have also returned to the US and now I have to start my life alone with my little one. It's a big challenge but I am ready to do it and to start what will be my new life.

Craftwise, I have been doing a stop. But not without finishing some projects that I started in Spain. A new beginning. A new life. My friend had her little baby Aitana and I made a crochet hat for her. Thanks to the super help of my sister in law that is soooo talented in crochet in soo many other areas. This is what it ended up looking like.

And of course Gisele got a wallhanging quilt made by he quilting pals so that she will remember that this time that we shared here with her was very special to all of us. We will miss you here Gisele!
