Finally, bag tutorial!

Well I have been asked so many times here to make a bag tutorial of those bags that I have done workshops on, and finally when I made one the other day to give a good friend who was visiting, I decided to also take some pictures and show how to make it. I hope you can make your own and enjoy having or giving away a new bag!

Bueno, me han pedido tantas veces que haga un tutorial de las bolsas que yo suelo ensenhar como hacer, que por fin el otro dia hice una a mi amiga que estaba visitandonos, y decidi hacerle fotos para ensenharos como hacerla. Espero que os hagais vuestras propias bolsas y que disfruteis teniendo o regalando una bolsa nueva!

First you need to cut the pieces of fabric for the outside, lining and handles. In my bag the outside fabric and inside are the same, a black quilted fabric that I bought. Since it was already quilted I thought it would make a great fabric for lining but when I combined it with the printed one, I thought it would look good on the outside too. The important thing for this bag is having two contrasting fabric for the outside, usually I put one with a busy print on the top section and a solid one on the bottom, but it is entirely up to your taste! If the fabric is stiff this would be best for this bag, otherwise, you can attach a piece of batting to the lining before assembling the bag. For the handles I usually use the printed one along with the lining fabric.

Lo primero que necesitais es cortar las telas para la parte de fuera, la de dentro y las asas. En mi bolsa, la parte de fuera y la de dentro son la misma tela, una acolchada en negro que compre. Como ya venia acolchada pense que seria una buena para dentro pero cuando la combine con la que tiene el dibujo, pense que se veria bien bonita por fuera tambien. Lo importante en esta bolsa es tener dos telas que contrasten para fuera, normalmente una con un dibujo llamativo y otra con un solido abajo, pero eso depende del gusto de cada uno! Si las telas son tiesas sera mejor para este tipo de bolsa, pero sino, tambien puedes ponerle un pedazo de relleno a la parte interna antes de montar la bolsa. Para las asas suelo poner la del dibujo por fuera y la del interior por dentro.

Outside:
black: 14" x 22"

With right sides facing each other, you sew the printed pieces to the outer piece along in the section that is 14” wide. It should look like this after the three pieces are together:

Con las partes buenas de la tela una frente a otra, coses las partes de dibujo a la tela de fuera solida, por el lado que es de 36 cm. Deberia verse asi despues de que las tres piezas esten juntas:

Then, you fold right sides together of the outer piece and sew the sides ¼” away from the edge. Make sure that the part where the printed fabric and solid fabric meet coincides exactly on top of the same area of the other side of the bag. You can see how I put some pins around that area to make sure the fabric stays in the exact position while I’m sewing it.

Luego, doblas las parte buenas de la tela mirandose de la parte de fuera y coses los lados a 1 cm de distancia del borde. Asegurate de que la parte donde la tela de dibujo y la otra se unen coincide con la del otro lado de la bolsa. Puedes ver como he puesto unos alfileres en esa zona para asegurarme de que la tela se quede en su lugar cuando la estoy cosiendo.

We will do the same thing with the lining fabric. Fold it in half and sew the side ¼” away from the edge.

Hacemos lo mosmo con la tela de dentro. Doblala por la mitad y cose a 1 cm del borde los lados.

Now we take each of those two parts and we are going to make the base of the bag. Taking the bag from the wrong side, we pull the corners at the bottom of the bag as to make a base. We will get two small triangles at the base and after pinning it, we sew it as shown in this picture. Here I made a big mistake that I had to fix later. I did it in the right side of the fabric, but you should do it in the wrong side of the fabric. We do it for the lining part and the outer part.

Ahora cogemos cada una de esas dos partes y les vamos a hacer la base. Ponemos la parte de fuera del reves, y tiramos de las esquinas en la parte de abajo de la bolsa como para hacer la base. Vamos a hacer dos pequeños triangulos en la base que tras sugetarlos con alfileres, los coseremos como en la foto. Aqui me equivoque y tuve que arreglarlo despues. Lo hice por el lado bueno de la tela, pero deberia ser por el lado opuesto. Se hace lo mismo en la parte de dentro que en la de fuera de la bolsa.

At the end it should look like this but you should see the wrong side of the fabric:

Then we cut off those triangles so that the bag ends up having a rectangular base, like this:

Luego cortamos esos triangulos para que la bolsa acabe teniendo una base rectangular, como esta:

The next step will be making the handles. I put the strips of fabric, the lining with the outer print fabric, right sides together and I sew the sides ¼” away from the edge.

El proximo paso seria hacer las asas. Yo pongo las tiras de tela, la tela de dentro con la del dibujo, las partes buenas enfrentadas y las cosas a 1 cm del borde.

If you make narrow handles, this could be the nightmare of your bag, turning them around, but this size was fairly easy to turn around. They should look like this, you should iron them at this point.

Si haces asas estrechas, esto seria la pesadilla de la bolsa, darles la vuelta, pero este tamaño fue facil para darles la vuelta. Deberian verse asi, se deben planchar al darles la vuelta.

I personally like to quilt the handles because it makes them a bit stiffer and they don’t fold or get wrinkly with the use. I made parallel lines, even if they are not 100% straight; it makes the bag look more professional. This is entirely optional.

A mi me gusta acolchar las asas porque se quedan mas duritas y no se doblan o arrugan con el uso. Hago lineas paralelas, incluso si no estan rectas al 100%; aun asi hace que la bolsa parezca mas professional. Esto es completamente opcional.

Now that you have the two handles finished, you just need to put the bag together. We put the outer side with the wrong side facing out, and the lining part, with the wrong side facing in. The lining goes inside the outer fabric and then we need to insert the handles like a sandwich so that the only visible parts are the ends of the handles. It is recommended to leave about an inch out to be able to reinforce the handles at the end. I didn’t leave much out because my handles would have been too short, but this is how it should look. I pinned the handles in place, measuring the same distance between them and the corner of the bag, for example 3” away.

Ahora que tenemos las dos asas acabadas, solo queda montar la bolsa. Ponemos la parte de fuera con la parte bonita mirando hacia adentro, y el interior de la bolsa, con la parte bonita mirando hacia fuera. El interior va por dentro de la tela de fuera y luego tenemos que meterle las asas como un sandwich para que solo se vean los extremos de las asas por fuera. Se recomienda dejar unos 2.5 cm por fuera para luego poder reforzar las asas al final. No deje mucho en esta bolsa porque las asas sino me iban a quedar demasiado cortas para mi gusto, pero deberia verse asi. Puse alfileres en las asas para que no se muevan, midiendo la misma distancia entre ellas y tambien dejando por ejemplo 7.5 cm del asa a la costura de la bolsa.

To sew it together, you insert the bag in the sewing machine starting from the inner part of one of the handles. The idea is that we are going to sew it around the border of the bag leaving an opening between the parts where you attach one of the handles. In this picture you can see where I started (at the bottom of the picture) and where I end it, leaving a gap between where the handles have been attached.

Para coser las partes juntas, metes la bolsa en la maquina de coser empezando por la parte interna de una de las asas. La idea es coser por el borde de la bolsa dejando una abertura entre las dos partes donde se coses una de las asas. En esta foto se puede ver donde commence (en la parte inferior de la foto) y donde lo acabe de coser, dejando un espacio entre los sitios donde conecte una de las asas.

That little gap will be the place where we turn the whole bag around. It is like magic! You flip it around and now you have an almost completed bag with a gap. Now we need to close the gap with top stitch. We pin the gap in place making sure that there are no wrinkles and sew around the whole circumference of the bag.

Ese pequeño espacio es por donde vamos a dar vuelta a la bolsa. Es magico! Le das la vuelta y ahora tienes casi completa la bolsa con un agujerito. Ahora necesitamos cerrer el agujero con una puntada por encima. Cerramos el agujero con alfileres asegurandonos de que no haya arrugas y cosemos por todo el borde de la bolsa.

Voila! Your bag is done!!!
Y ahi esta! La bolsa esta acabada!
Ah! I didn’t make a pocket this time but I usually attach it to the lining at the very beginning even before sewing the sides. This will make an even more practical bag!

Ah! No hice un bolsillo esta vez, pero suelo añadirselo a la parte de dentro al principio, incluso antes de coser los lados. Esto hara que la bolsa sea aun mas practica!
