The summer is here

And with the summer, the watermelons. I have been thinking about them for a while, and that’s why I made a watermelon pincushion. It looks more like an inflated banana with watermelon colors, but the thing of the seeds helps a lot to picture that is a watermelon, although most watermelons are seedless these days….(we bought a real one two days ago and it was sweet mmmm).

Y con el verano, las sandias. He estado pensando en ellas durante un tiempo, y por eso he hecho un acerico de sandia. Parece mas un platano hinchado con colores de sandia, pero las pepitas ayuda a que te hagas mas a la idea de que es una sandia, aunque ahora la mayoria de sandias vienen sin pepitas….(compramos una sandia el otro dia y estaba super dulce mmmm).




I make these small projects while I work on the bigger ones. I have updates on those. I finished the top of a handmade quilt that I am making for several months already. I work on that quilt on Sundays when I get together with my friends. Oftentimes I have my baby with me which means I don’t get much done, but I finally finished! Now I have to put the back and batting together, which is the part that I like the least, and then I have to quilt it.

Hago estos proyectos pequenhos mientras trabajo en los otros mas grandes. Tengo novedades. He acabado la parte de arriba de un edredon que estoy haciendo a mano y que llevo haciendolo varios meses. Suelo trabajar en ese edredon los domingos cuando me junto con mis amigas. Muchas veces tengo a mi bebe conmigo asi que no avanzo mucho, pero por fin la he acabado! Ahora tengo que poner la parte de atras y el relleno juntos, que para mi es la peor parte, y luego tengo que coser a traves.

Tips on writing the living web

I was thinking about what Hillary at wee wonderfuls posted the other day. She was concerned about how little she was writing on her blog lately and how it was becoming less about her personal life and more about finishing projects.
Estaba pensando en lo que Hillary de wee wonderfuls escribio el otro dia. Le preocupaba lo poco que esta escribiendo en su blog ultimamente sobre cosas personales y mas sobre proyectos acabados.

It got me thinking about it too, because after all, it is nice to write to be motivated to make stuff and also to actually finish projects that otherwise I would procrastinate and would maybe never finish. I enjoy reading blogs of people that tell a story as well as show their creative side. I usually want to know more about the person that I'm reading and I go back to their original posts to see what really motivated them to start and what their situation is. I am usually not very personal in my blog, I try to leave my family on the side although sometimes I cannot help but saying something about my two men. It's hard to balance how much you want to show about yourself. Although I think that if it was more personal it would be more interesting...
Me hizo pensar sobre el tema tambien, porque despues de todo, esta bien escribir en el blog para estar mas motivada para hacer cosas y para acabar proyectos que de otra manera no acabaria nunca. Me gusta leer blogs de personas que cuentan una historia a la vez que muestran su lado creativo. Normalmente quiero saber mas de la persona que leo y suelo ir a lo que escribieron cuando empezaron el blog para ver lo que les motivo a empezarlo y para saber cual es su situacion. Normalmente yo no soy muy personal en mi blog, suelo dejar a mi familia de lado aunque a veces no puedo evitar mencionar a mis dos hombrecitos. Es dificil decidir cuanto ensenhar sobre tu vida personal. Aunque creo que si fuera mas personal seria mas interesante...
Today I run into this article in which they show ten rules to make your blog writing more appeal. They are general rules, for any kind of blog, and I found some tips there that I will think about before I start writing each of my posts. I guess the most important one is the first one. Write for a reason, which I think we all crafty people have, maybe more than one. Getting inspired, learning, showing, and producing creative things.
Hoy me encontre con este articulo en el que muestran diez reglas de como hacer que tu blog sea mas atractivo. Son reglas generales, para cualquier tipo de blog, y encontre algunos consejos que creo que pensare en ellos antes de ponerme a escribir cada dia. Creo que el mas importante es el primero. Escribe por una razon, lo cual yo creo que todas las personas que estan en este mundillo de las manualidades tienen, quizas mas de una. Estar inspirada, aprender, ensenhar, y producir cosas creativas.

They also mention here that you have to be passionate when you write. I think that shows off more in some people than others. I am not very good at writing, but I am passionate about what I do, so I think it doesn't show many times just because of the way I write.
Tambien mencionan que debes ser apasionado de lo que escribes. Yo creo que en algunos blogs es mas aparente que en otros. A mi no se me da muy bien escribir, pero soy apasionada de lo que hago, asi que creo que no se ve muchas veces simplemente por la manera en que escribo.

I usually translate my posts into Spanish and sometimes I think....I shouldn't write too much because then I have to translate it and it's really hard!! my native language is Spanish, but I am so used to speaking in English that I just can't find the right words to translate English expressions into Spanish. I bought a dictionary and I have it here handly so I'm actually learning how to be a better translator thanks to the blog. Anyways, I just thought I would mention about that article because I know I am not the only one who worries about writing and blogging and making a more appealing post.
Suelo traducir lo que escribo al castellano y a veces pienso...no deberia haber escrito tanto porque ahora lo tengo que traducir y cuesta mucho!! mi lengua nativa es el castellano, pero estoy tan acostumbrada a escribir en ingles que a veces no encuentro las palabras adecuadas para traducir una expresion inglesa al castellano. Me compre un diccionario y aqui lo tengo a mi ladito asi que con esto del blog estoy aprendiendo a ser una mejor traductora. Bueno, solo pense que mencionaria lo del articulo porque se que no soy la unica que se preocupa de lo que escribo y del blog y de hacer algo mas atractivo para la audiencia.

Coloriffic swap-o-rama June

I got interested on doing swaps with people around the world. I am curious about what other people with similar interests might find over at the places where they live. That's why I signed up for June's coloriffic swap-o-rama, a group in Flickr that swaps stuff of different colors each month. June's colors were back, white and a third color of your own choice. Looking for black and white stuff only was hard at the beginning. Then I added red and everything seemed easier, I love red. I went to the craft store and got cool things that I thought the other crafty person might like. These are the package contents:

Me enganche a hacer intercambios de cosas con gente de todo el mundo. Tengo curiosidad de lo que otra gente con intereses similares a los mios pueden encontrar en los lugares donde viven. Por eso me apunte al coloriffic swap-o-rama del mes de Junio, un grupo en Flickr que intercambia cosas de ciertos colores cada mes. Este mes los colores elegidos eran el negro, el blanco y un tercer color de tu propia eleccion. Buscar cosas de color blanco y negro no fue facil al principio. Entonces anhadi el rojo y todo fue mas facil, me encanta el color rojo. Friendly neighbours

Here in the village where we live there are a lot of international students. The mayority are Chinese and usually their parents come to visit for long periods of time. I have some neighbours from China who got married and the parents of one of them came for 6 months. They are not grandparents yet but love children so they take care of all the children of other students who don't have their parents here. They love my son, he is exotic to them I guess, fair skin, blonde and blue eyes. Everytime they get a chance they grab him and we try to comunicate with my few Chinese words and body language. We do our best but no much conversation comes across. But they are very friendly and they always give us dumplings and watermelon or whatever they have. My Chinese friend translated for me the other day and she told me that they are leaving to China tomorrow. I though I should do something to wish them a safe trip and to say thank you for being so kind to us. Following Gisele's idea I made them this potholder, with a watermelon on it, just like they one we ate together last Friday. I hope they like it.

Aqui en la villa donde vivimos hay muchos estudiantes internacionales. La mayoria son chinos y normalmente sus padres vienen a visitar por largos periodos de tiempo. Tengo unos vecinos de China que se casaron y vinieron los padres de uno de ellos por 6 meses. Aun no son abuelos pero les encantan los ninhos, asi que cuidan de los ninhos de otros estudiantes que no tienen a sus padres aqui. Ellos adoran a mi ninho, es exotico para ellos creo yo, piel clara, rubio, ojos azules. Cada vez que tienen la oportunidad lo cogen e intentamos comunicarnos con mis pocas palabras en chino y el lenguaje corporal. Hacemos lo que podemos pero no sale mucha conversacion. Pero son muy amigables y siempre nos estan ofreciendo comida china, sandia o lo que tengan por en medio. Mi amiga china me tradujo el otro dia que se van a China manhana. Pense que podria hacerles algo para desearles un buen viaje y darles las gracias por ser tan amables. Siguiendo la idea de Gisele he hecho una especie de manopla para agarrar recipientes calientes que tiene una sandia, como la que nos comimos juntos el Viernes. Espero que les guste.

Color

I am so happy today because it's still Saturday and I managed to finish the entry for this week's Wiplash competition. This is the last week and I had a great time creating things almost every week. When I saw that this week the theme was "color" I was really happy because I love mixing colors and playing with color. I think the hardest part for me when I'm making something is figuring out how to combine properly colors and how to make it work. This week I decided to try something I have never done before. I made a quilted purse with the sewing machine, even though I didn't think I could quilt anything with my machine. But it worked! and I am very happy with the results. This is the general front view. It has a long string to be able to wear it crossing your chest.

Hoy estoy muy contenta porque aun es Sabado y ya me las he arreglado para acabar mi proyecto para el concurso de Wiplash. Esta es la ultima semana y me lo he pasado muy bien creando cosas casi cada semana. Cuando vi que el tema de esta semana era "color" me alegre mucho porque me encanta combinar colores y jugar con los colores. Creo que la parte mas dificil para mi cuando hago algo es averiguar como combinar los colores correctamente para que quede bien. He hecho un bolsito acolchado con la maquina de coser, aunque no pense que esta maquina pudiera hacer eso. Pero me ha salido bien! y estoy muy contenta con el resultado final. Esta es la vista frontal. Tiene un asa largo para poderlo cruzar por el pecho.

The top has a ribbon inside. The design for this purse was originally a coin pouch but I made it bigger and modified it so that it could be used as a regular purse.

La parte de arriba tiene un lazo por dentro. El disenho de este bolso es ralmente un monedero pero lo he modificado, haciendolo mas grande y de manera que pueda ser usado como bolso.


And this is the purse in use, an attempt of taking a picture of myself while looking after my son.

Fresh grown tomato

Today I made my very first pincushion and it's a classic one, the tomato, although this is one of those vine ripe tomatos but green...got the tutorial from Martha Stewart Living...much easier than it looks. I will give it to my friend who I am introducing to the wonderful world of sewing, crafting, quilting....

Hoy hice mi primer acerico y es uno muy clasico, el tomate, aunque este es uno de los que maduran en la mimsa vinha pero en verde...saque como hacerlo de la revista de Martha Stewart Living...mucho mas facil de lo que parece. Se lo dare a mi amiga a quien estoy metiendo en el mundo de la costura, los trabajos manuales y del quilting....

Meet Petrita : Conoce a Petrita

It's about time I posted something really crafty. This is Petrita, my new doll. I like her accesories, and I am even thinking about making her a purse. I have been working on this one over a week, I had to go shopping to get ribbon and buttons to finish it. I got the inspiration and pattern from a Japanese book. I am also practicing with my Japanese :)

Ya era hora de que pusiera algo de trabajos manuales en el blog. Esta es Petrita, mi nueva munheca. Me gustan sus complementos, y estoy pensando en hacerle un bolso. He estado trabajando en esta munheca mas de una semana, y he tenido que ir a comprar lazo y botones para acabarla. He sacado la inspiracion de un libro Japones. Tambien estoy practicando con mi Japones, que no se me olvide :)

And this is the doll I have been working on today, it's driving me crazy because the pieces are so small that it is really hard to turn the pieces inside out, I had to repeat all the pieces with different fabric except for the head. When I get it dressed up it will be better...I hope:)

Y esta es la munheca en la que he estado trabajando hoy, me esta volviendo loca porque las piezas son tan pequenhas que no hay manera de darles la vuelta, asi que he tenido que repetir todas las partes excepto la cabeza con otro material. Cuando la vista quedara mejor...espero :)


A good and a bad thing going on...the bad one is that yesterday while eating nuts I broke my tooth... a molar....ayayayay...it doesn't hurt but I guess it will hurt my pocket when I go to the dentist...the good one is that my friend is back from Brazil :) She also brought me great things among which I wanted to show you the little guy, DARUMA-san, which comes originally from Japan. This guy doesn't have eyes and you need to paint one eye and make a wish, and when your wish comes true you can pain the other one. I love it, I used to have a couple back when I was living in Japan. I have to save it for a great wish.

Me han ocurrido una cosa buena y otra mala...la mala es que se me ha roto una muela miesntras comia frutos secos....ayayayayay...no duele pero me va a doler el bolsillo cuando vaya al dentista...la buena es que mi amiga ya ha vuelto de Brasil :) Me ha traido un monton de cosas chulas entre las cuales queria ensenharos a este hombrecito, DARUMA-san, que es originario de Japon. Este hombrecito no tiene ojos y tienes que pintarle un ojo y pedir un deseoy cuando el deseo se te cumpla le pintas el otro. Me encanta, solia tener un par de darumas cuando vivia en Japon. Tengo que reservarmelo para un buen deseo.

Bamboo collage

This is a paper craft I am working on...it's a decoration for the walls all made with papers. I am using old plant magazines that I found in a paper recycling bin and I still want to cover all the balck space with green pieces of paper. I like it so far, I just hope the glue stays...

Esto es un trabajo manual que estoy haciendo con papel...es para decorar una pared y esta todo hecho de papeles. Estoy usando unas revistas de plantas que encontre en una papelera de reciclaje de papel y quiero cubrir toda la parte negra con trocitos de imagenes verdes. Me gusta como esta quedando, solo espero que el pegamento se quede y no se vayan cayendo los papelitos...

Back to business

I have been a little blog-lazy since my computer got blocked a few days ago as a reminescence of me not being a student anymore but still connected to the University server. I have another computer but I was too lazy to move the memory card and I also cannot access some of my files there. But now everything is solved here and I am back. Also, my friend is travelling and I am less motivated to do crafts, although I am still doing stuff here and there. Yesterday I went shopping for fabric and I am starting a new doll today, let's see how much I get done now. I also signed up for this month's color-iffic swap-o-rama, I need to find black and white stuff and add another color to the things I will send to some secret crafty buddy. It's been harder than I thought, I am not a black and white person, I am more for the bright colors, but by the end of the month hopefully I will have all good stuff to send.

He estado un poco perezosa con el blog desde que se me quedo el ordenador bloqueado hace unos dias como reminiscencia de no ser estudiante y aun usar el servidor de la universidad. Tengo otro ordenador pero me daba pereza usarlo porque no tengo como extraer las fotos y no tengo acceso a mis archivos. Pero ya esta todo solucionado y estoy de vuelta. Tambien, mi amiga esta de viaje y estoy menos motivada para hacer trabajos manuales, aunque aun estoy haciendo cosillas. Ayer fui a comprar una tela para empezar una nueva munheca hoy, a ver cuanto avanzo. Tambien me he apuntado al color-iffic swap-o-rama de este mes, necesito encontrar cosas en blanco y negro y de otro color para mandarselas a un companhero secreto que tambien haga trabajos manuales y me esta resultando mas dificil de lo que pensaba, me gustan mas los colores vivos, pero para finales de mes espero tener unas cuantas cosas chulas para mandar.

I like looking at my fabric stash and it's also good to get stuff away from my almost 6 month old baby.

Me gusta ver mis montones de telas y tambien esta bien para mantener cosas fuera del alcance de mi bebe de casi 6 meses.

Flowers in my garden

Not that we have a big front yard or even a yard, we just have a piece of land in front of my appartment to plant stuff. On top of that my husband likes to compulsively get more plants and so he also has landscaped the neighbours yards and the yard in front of the laundry room. Here are some pictures of our beautiful flowers:
No esque tengamos un gran jardin en frente de mi casa, ni siquiera se le puede llamar jardin, pero si que tenemos un poco de espacio para plantar cosas. Ademas a mi marido le encanta conseguir plantas de manera compulsiva y asi que ha puesto plantas en casa de los vecinos y tambien delante de la lavanderia. How to make a fabric collage

In a previous post I showed the apron I made following the yellow and white theme of April's tie one on. Several preople asked me how did I make this...what is the technique I used...and I thought, well I didn't use any technique, I just put pieces of fabric together and figured it out as I made it! But the truth is that following a plan and a logic sequence sewing the pieces of fabric would have made my life way easier. For that reason I decided to make a small tutorial about how to do this fabric collage, which actually will help me in future projects.

En un mensaje anterior mostre un mandil que hice siguiendo el tema amarillo-blanco del mes de Abril de "tie one on". Varias personas me preguntaron como lo hice...que tecnica use...y pense, no use ninguna tecnica, simplemente puse los trozos juntos y fui resolviendo los porblemas que surgian segun progresaba! Pero la verdad es que si tienes un plan y una secuencia logica de como coser las piezas es mucho mas facil. Por eso, he decidido hacer una pequenha explicacion de como hacer este collage de telas, que de hecho me ayudara en proyectos futuros.

Here is how it goes:
Asi es como se hace:

1- First you choose multiple fabrics that you would like to combine and cut squares and rectangules of different sizes without paying too much attention to how they will combine.

1- Primero eliges varias telas que te gustaria combinar y cortas cuadrados y rectangulos de diferentes tamanhos sin prestar atencion de como los vas a combinar


2- The pieces are organized in blocks so that the colors combine properly and also leaving axes between the blocks as shown in the following picture:

2- Los trozos se organizan en bloques de manera que los colores combinen y dejando unos ejes entre los bloques como se muestra en la siguiente figura:


3- The pieces are put together now to see how the final result will be, making sure there are no spaces in between blocks. In this case I see there is a space on the top part of the collage.

3- Las piezas se ponen juntas para ver el resultado final, y para asegurarse de que no hay espacios entre los bloques. En este caso veo que hay un espacio en la parte de arriba del collage.



4- Another piece of fabric is needed on top in order to cover that whole (the red one).

4- Se necesita otro trozo de tela arriba para cubrir el agujero (la pieza roja)


5- The blocks are separated again and rearraned if necessary and then the pieces within each block are sewn together making sure there is a 1/4 inch unstitched space at the ends. Then the pieces are ironed leaving the seams towards the darker fabric.

5- Los bloques son separados de nuevo volviendo a asignar los bloques en caso de que haya anhadido piezas nuevas y entonces las piezas de dentro de cada bloque se coses dejando 0.5 cm sin coser en cada esquina. Entonces las telas se planchan dejando las costuras hacia las telas mas oscuras.


6-Now the blocks that have a common axes are sewn.

6- Ahora los bloques que tienen un eje comun se cosen.


7-It is finished by sewing all the blocks together.

7- Se acaba cosiendo todos los bloques juntos.



8- Now 1/4 inch of each border is folded and ironed and then the collage can be sewn on top of another fabric to make it more structured.

8- Ahora se doblan 0.5 cm de los bordes y se planchan para poder coserlo encima de otra tela que le de mas estructura.
