Baby quilts

Last week when I got my new sewing machine I decided to start those two baby quilts that I am planning to give to two new babies that will be born soon. I was very happy when I found such colorful fabrics a couple of months ago so I just needed to figure out the design, and since they were so colorful I decided they would be unisex. As time went by I found out one of those babies was going to be a boy and the other one a girl. I thought it would be nice to make the same quilt with just a different base color to see how different they look. This is what I came up with:

Now I have to figure ot the backing and then I will do some quilting with my machine for the very first time...let's see how that goes. I don't have a walking foot so I am not sure if it will work without it, but I have to give it a try. I was experimenting last night with the free hand quilting motion but it was quite a disaster, I think that is a very difficult thing to do because since it's hard to control de speed in which you move your fabrics, the stitch lenght varies quite a bit. Maybe as I get better at this I will be able to do it, but not now...

I quilts are very nice! I like the way they turned out after you add the blue/pink sashing.

Love those! The center fabrics are so nice and they look great with the different backings.
My mom, an experienced quilter, would tell you the key to quilting the fabrics together is to pin everything to excess. Use lots of pins to get it flat!
