Flowers, photography and science

We have been enjoying two weeks of leisure, doing just fun things with family and Luca could not have been happier. It is great to do things out of the routine once in a while, as I think he grows and matures so much in these periods. We are alone again, but busy. I have been preparing for a scientific meeting where I was presenting. It had been years since the last time I did it, so I was a bit nervous, but with nothing lose, I think I did well and my talk came at a good point of the symposium. I hope it is meaningful for someone and also for me in the future. It is good to get my brain back to science, not hard, like riding a bike, it all comes back.

Today it was a cloudy day, and we spent the day in the science museum and the botanical gardens. I have only been there a couple of times but haven't really had a chance to see most of the gardens. I love botanical gardens, and these in particular are just amazing. So I took some closeup pictures of some flowers as the day light was good for it and we both enjoyed the stroll around there. I wish I could devote more time to photography, that is another thing that is becoming interesting to me...maybe one day. For now, I have been painting, starting a second painting and hopefully I will also continue with sewing. I want to finish a bed quilt that I started last year. And maybe some more furniture painting in the near future??? overambitious??? maybe...we will see. Once thing that I have realized lately is that there are a million gardens or parks in this town, all of them beautiful, and as much as I enjoy plants and horticulture, I love art, creating and all that world just moves me. I so wish I had time to study more about art...

Hemos podido disfrutar de dos semanas de ocio, haciendo cosas entretenidas con familiares y Luca estuvo feliz. Esta muy bien hacer cosas fuera de la rutina e vez en cuando, ya que creo que crece y madura mucho en estos períodos. Estamos solos otra vez, pero ocupados. He estado preparandome para un congreso científica donde presentaba. Habían pasado años desde la última vez que lo hice, así que estaba un poco nerviosa, pero sin nada que perder, creo que lo hice bien y mi charla se dio en un buen momento del simposio. Espero que sirrva de algo para alguien y también para mí en un futuro. Me viene bien volver a meter mi cerebrito en la ciencia, no es difícil, es como andar en bicicleta, me vuelvo a acordar.

Hoy ha estado nublado, y pasamos el día en el museo de ciencia y el jardin botánico. Sólo he estado allí un par de veces, pero realmente no habia tenido la oportunidad de ver la mayoría de los jardines. Me encantan los jardines botánicos, y este, en particular, es simplemente impresionante. Así que tomé algunas fotos de primer plano de algunas flores ya que la luz del día era buena para hacerlo y los dos disfrutamos del paseo por allí. Me gustaría poder dedicar más tiempo a la fotografía, eso es otra cosa que se está volviendo interesante para mí ... tal vez algun día. Por ahora, he estado pintando, he comenzado un segundo cuadro y espero también seguir con la costura. Quiero terminar una colcha de cama que empecé el año pasado. Y tal vez pintar algún mueble más en un futuro próximo??? demasiado ambicioso??? tal vez ... ya veremos. Lo que si que me he dado cuenta últimamente es que hay un millón de jardines o parques en esta ciudad, todas ellos hermosos, y tanto como me gustan las plantas y la horticultura, me encanta el arte, la creación y todos lo relacionado con ese mundo, me conmueve. Ojala que tuviera tiempo para estudiar más de arte ...

Summer vacations

Fun doesn’t start to describe how it has been for Luca these vacations, with his aunt first and then with his grandparents. It has been all about him, as it usually is, but with a new million fun things to do, and now that he is older to appreciate and discuss things better, we all enjoy it even more.

They camped in my patio, then we went camping (yes you heard right, even ME!) we hiked, he went swimming and got wet in all the parks several miles around here, he started playing teeball, and now he is into digging worms and going fishing. He will miss them all, we will both miss them but will have fond memories of our wonderful vacations in St Louis.

Diverstidas no son manera de describir las vacaciones de Luca, con su tia primero y luego con sus abuelos. Ha sido todo para el, como suele ser, pero con un millon de cosas nuevas que hacer, y ahora que es mayor como para apreciar y comentar las cosas aun major, todos lo disfrutamos aun mas.

Acamparon en el patio de mi casa, luego fuimos de acampada (oisteis bien, incluso YO!) hicimos senderismo, fue a nadir y se mojo en todos los parques a la redonda, empezo a jugar al baseball, y ahora le ha dado por buscar lombrices y por ir de pesca. Les vamos a echar de menos a todos, los dos, pero recordaremos estas vacaciones en San Luis con mucha alegria.

Pirate banana bread

I made one of my banana bread, well it would have been 2 loafs into a pirate cake for Luca. He is into pirates, and I couldn't resist when I saw the pan to make it...like I couldn't resist when I saw a hat and jacket with pirate motives...I am so glad he is finally into pirates :)

Hice un pan de platano de los mio, bueno hubieran sido dos panes, lo hice de barco pirata. Ahora le ha dado por los piratas y no me pude resistir al ver el molde para hacerlo...como no me pude resistir cuando vi un goroo y una chaqueta con toques piratas...que bien que por fin le gusten los piratas :)

Painting

I have started painting since I came to St Louis. I have a friend who is an artists and I enjoy going to her home weekly to paint, draw or just try to get something out of a brush.

I have been working on this painting for a few weeks now, it was a present that I gave to my sister in law for her birthday. My inspiration, Japan, of course. I love Japan and Japanese things and from a book I saw a picture of a bento box, full of colorful delicacies from Japan. I thought this was something that I felt like painting and it would be something that I would need to finish within weeks, to give it to her when she came, and I am happy to say that I did. I finished it the same day she got here and I am ready to start a new one. I think she liked it, and I hope it decorates and brings color to a corner in her home.

He empezado a pintar desde que llegué a San Luis. Tengo una amiga que es artista y me gusta ir a su casa semanalmente para pintar, dibujar o simplemente tratar de sacar algo de un pincel. He estado trabajando en esta pintura unas cuantas semanas, fue un regalo que le he hecho a mi cuñada por su cumpleaños. Mi inspiración, Japón, por supuesto. Me encanta Japón y lo japonés, y lo saque de un libro que vi con una foto de una caja de comida, lleno de coloridas delicias del Japón. Pensé que esto era algo que me apetecia pintar y sería algo que tendría que terminar en unas semanas, para darle a ella cuando viniera, y estoy feliz de decir que lo hice. Terminé el mismo día que lleguo aquí y estoy lista para comenzar una nueva. Creo que a ella le ha gustado, y espero que decore y de color a algun rincón en su casa.

Cards

Today it was Luca's last day of school, for now. He will go back to summer school so he can keep the level he is at right now through the summer. He had a show today at school and I cried so much and I smiled too and I felt a lot of emotions all at once that it is hard to describe. He was so funny, he decided he was going to yell out his lines of the song and very seriously he did...it was unexpected as most children are soft spoken. I can say he loves the stage and he loves to perform, but of course, with his hands in his pockets. Maybe he will be an actor when he grows up, who knows. The progress he has made is amazing, and just like in the past, I have to be very thankful to all these wonderful women who have put so much effort into making him succeed. This is long and intense journey, and I feel very fortunate to have been in touch with so many wonderful professionals. Luca gave his 5 teachers a little something with a card that I made thanking them with the teacher's name and his name written by Luca. Finally, I am using my sewing machine again.

Hoy fue el último día del cole de Luca, por ahora. Él regresará al cole en verano para que pueda mantener el nivel en el que está en este momento todo el verano. Había una actuacion hoy en el colegio y lloré mucho y también me rei y sentí muchas emociones a la vez que es difícil describirlas. Fue tan divertido, Luca decidió que iba a gritar sus líneas de la canción y lo hizo muy en serio ... fue inesperado ya que la mayoría de los niños tienen voz suave. Puedo decir que le encanta el escenario y le encanta actuar, pero por supuesto, con las manos en los bolsillos. Tal vez sea un actor cuando crezca, quién sabe. El progreso que ha hecho es increíble, y al igual que en el pasado, tengo que estar muy agradecida a todas estas mujeres maravillosas que han puesto tanto esfuerzo en hacer que mejorara. Este es un viaje largo e intenso, y me siento muy afortunada de haber estado en contacto con tan buenos profesionales. Luca dio a su 5 profesores un regalito con una tarjeta que he hecho dandoles las gracias y donde Luca puso el nombre de la profesora y su propio nombre. Por fin, estoy volviendo a usar mi máquina de coser.

The gap is getting smaller

I can't believe it is finally happening. Not only Luca is progressing, but also his gap with hearing kids is getting smaller, finally. He has made so much progress in these past months that it is unreal. It is nice to see it with tests measuring his understanding, his language, his articulation, his level of expression. I am able to see his progress, everyday, but it is hard to measure and it is hard to imagine what kids his age should be doing. His greatest improvement has been speech. He is so much more clear to understand. He still has a long way to go, but he is doing great and picking things up really quick. I also try to help him at home. It is hard to do it, but since I have a weekly meeting with his teacher about things I could do with him, or activities that we actually do with him in the classroom that not only gives me ideas but also motivation and creates a habit for me to do it in our daily lives. Still, I am not all day following him around to bombard him with language but every once in a while we do sit down and talk or do some activity together pulling every word and sentence out of it as we do it. I am happy and I am looking forward to next year, I can't wait to see him really having long conversations with me.

No puedo creer que finalmente este sucediendo. No sólo Luca está progresando, sino que ademas la diferencia con los niños de su edad es cada vez más pequeña, por fin. Ha avanzado mucho en estos últimos meses, tanto que es irreal. Da gusto verlo con los tests que miden lo que entiende, su lenguaje, su articulación, su nivel de expresión. Yo soy capaz de ver su progreso, todos los días, pero es difícil medirlo y es difícil imaginar lo que los niños de su edad deberían estar haciendo. Su mayor mejora ha sido de la articulacion. Se le entiende mucho mas claro. Todavía tiene un largo camino por recorrer, pero que está mejorando mucho y aprendiendo muy rápido. También trato de ayudarle en casa. Es difícil hacerlo, pero como tengo una reunión semanal con su maestra acerca de las cosas que podía hacer con él, incluso hacemos actividades con él en la clase y ademas que no es que sólo me de ideas, sino también me motiva y crea un hábito para que lo implemente en nuestra vida cotidiana. Aun asi, no estoy todo el dia bombardeandole con lenguaje, pero de vez en cuando nos sentamos y hablamos o hacemos alguna actividad juntos sacando de cada palabra y cada frase de él como puedo. Estoy feliz y espero mas cosas para el año que viene, en realidad tengo unas ganas de verlo teniendo largas conversaciones conmigo.

Happy happy birthday

This is the fourth year in a row that we will be celebrating my husband's birthday but without him. It is an odd feeling, strange to celebrate something that unfortunately it is no longer happening. But for some reason I like to celebrate it in my own particular way. I know it is confusing for Luca, he is focused on cakes and opening presents, and not having the birthday boy with us...makes it hard to imagine how to do all of that. To me it means once again the celebration of the wonderful person that he was, and for that reason I like to do it. I hope Luca soon understands that even though he is not present with us, he is with us in spirit and he will always be.

I always like to post a picture of him form my archives, for someone to bring back some memories of him. I think it is a nice feeling. This one is of him with his research. He was a hard working man and whatever he pursued, he did it really well. He made us all very proud of him.

Este es el cuarto año consecutivo en que vamos a celebrar el cumpleaños de mi marido, pero sin él. Es una sensación rara, extraño celebrar algo que por desgracia ya no está sucediendo. Pero por alguna razón me gusta celebrarlo a mi manera particular. Sé que Luca se arma un lio, que el solo piensa en las tartas y en abrir los regalos, y no tener al cumpleañero con nosotros... hace que sea difícil imaginar cómo se puede hacer todo eso. Para mí significa una vez más la celebración de la maravillosa persona que era, y por eso me gusta hacerlo. Espero que Luca pronto comprenda que a pesar de que no este presente con nosotros, está con nosotros en espíritu, y siempre lo estará.

Siempre me gusta poner una foto de él que saco de mis archivos, para traer de vuelta algunos recuerdos de él a alguien que le conocio. Creo que es una sensación agradable. Esta es una de él con su investigación. Era una persona muy trabajadora y todo lo que se propuso, lo hizo muy bien. Nos hizo sentir a todos muy orgullosos de él.

Hi!

My camera is broken again, and it is hard to find things to post about without the pics! I made a cake the other day, it was a roll stuffed with strawberries and whipped cream...it was good although I think it could have been better...it is always good to try and see how you can improve it...the problem is that even though I did share with with friends, I still had half of it leftover and I ate most of it but since Luca is not crazy about sweets, then it is all on me!!! too much, I should say, so that part discourages me from trying new things. I need to have friends over, and bring things to parties so that I can practice more!!

Let's see...I received several presents this week. My good friends and my sister in law sent me birthday and mother's day presents. I didn't expect any of them, so it was a nice surprise. I got several things for cake decorating, something for the gym, and a little coin purse from anthropology along with a gift card! I love that store so I will probably have trouble deciding what to get! Everything is cool in that store...I also bought some colorful bowls and molds to cook at home. Again, I really need to start producing more and using all the wonderful bakeware/cookware that I already have.

But I have been doing things lately, among others, some painting and some sewing. I made these two bags to give to two little girls. I hope they enjoy them. I hadn't made one of these in such a long time and since a friends wanted me to teach her how to make it I went ahead and made two to give away.

Mi cámara está rota otra vez, y es difícil encontrar cosas que poner en el post sin fotos! Hice una tarta el otro día, que era un rollo relleno de fresas y nata montada... salio buena, aunque creo que podría haber salido mejor ... siempre es bueno probar y ver cómo se puede mejorar... el problema es que a pesar de que la probamos con amigos, me quedo la mitad y me comí las sobras en su mayor parte perues a Luca no le emocionan los dulces, esi que todo me lo acabo comiendo yo! demasiado, diría yo, por lo que a veces no intento hacer cosas nuevas. Necesito invitar a más amigos, y llevar los dulces a fiestas para poder practicar más!

Vamos a ver ... He recibido varios regalos esta semana. Mis buenas amigas y mi cuñada me enviaron regalos de cumpleaños y por el día de la madre. No esperaba ninguno de ellos, así que fue una grata sorpresa. Me regalaron varias cosas para decoración de pasteles, algo para el gimnasio, y un monedero pequeño de la tienda antropología, junto con una tarjeta de regalo! Me encanta esa tienda, así que probablemente tendre problemas para decidir qué comprarme! Todo es chulisimo en esa tienda ... También compré algunos cuencos de colores y moldes para cocinar en casa. Una vez más... realmente tengo que empezar a producir más con todos los utensilios para hornear o de cocina maravillosos que ya tengo.

ero he estado haciendo varias cosas últimamente, entre otras, algo de pintura y costura. Hice estas dos bolsas para darles a dos niñas pequeñas. Espero que las disfruten. Yo no había hecho una de estas desde hacia tiempo y como mi amiga quería que le enseñase cómo hacerlas aproveche e hice dos para regalar.

Mother's day

I had a wonderful mothers day yesterday. My little one and my family and friends were the best as usual. Luca told me also a wonderful thing, he said, Mommy, thank you for school. What a present!!

I am just copying this from another family with a child with cochlear implants . I felt very identified with it.

Here’s to the Moms who have had to learn a new language too fast full of Auditory Verbal/Auditory Oral terms and audiological jargon.

Here’s to the Moms who face the “experts” and fight for their child’s best interest in IFSP/IEP meetings and in those meetings where you are just trying to make the system better.

Here’s to the Moms who can wrestle two CIs or HAs onto a squirming toddler… and replace it 20-40 times each day, even in the car, without loosing their cool.

Here’s to the Moms who can cook dinner, answer the phone, and change a CI/HA battery without breaking a sweat.

Here’s to the Moms who constantly have to explain their child’s “equipment” and answer the question are those forever?

Here’s to the Moms who have ever felt the pain of having a child who is “different”.

Here’s to the Moms who never take a single word for granted.

Here’s to the Moms who never fail to astound me with their capacity to persevere… and to love.

Tuve un dia de la madre maravilloso ayer. Gracias a mi chiquitin y mi familia y amigos que fueron los mejores, como de costumbre. Luca me dijo también algo maravilloso, dijo, mamá, gracias por el colegio. ¡Qué regalo!

Estoy copiando esto de un blog de otra familia, me sentí muy identificado con él ...

ESTO VA PARA LAS MAMAS

Esto va para las mamas que no han "firmado" para ser padres de un ninh@ sordo o con problemas de audición, pero de todas maneras lo son con gran alegria y carinho.

Esto va para las mamas que narran cada segundo de cada día, sin importarle lo que otros puedan pensar.

Esto va para las mamas que ponen kilometros en sus coches yendo y viniendo a las sesiones de terapia de innumerables citas con el médico, ajuste de audifonos, programacion de implantes cocleares, y mucho más.

Esto va para las mamas que trabajan duro para ser el mejor defensor de su hijo y el principal modelo de lenguaje.

Esto va para las mamas que han tenido que aprender una nueva lengua demasiado rápido lleno de términos del metodo verbal u oral y la terminologia audiológica.

Esto va para las mama que se enfrentan a los "expertos" y luchan por el interés de sus hijos en las reuniones para conseguir servicios para los ninhos en el colegio, en las reuniones donde se están tratando de hacer que el sistema sea mejor.

Esto va para las mamas que pueden luchar con dos audifonos o implantes cocleares y ponerselos a un niño pequeño que no para ... y volverlos a poner de 20-40 veces al día, incluso en el coche, sin perder la calma.

He aquí a la madres que pueden hacer la cena, contestar el teléfono, y cambiar una pila de implante o audifono sin estresarse.

Esto va para las mamas que constantemente tienen que explicar sobre los aparatos de sus hijos y responder a la pregunta "son para siempre?"

Esto va para las mamas que alguna vez han sentido el dolor de tener un hijo que es "diferente".

Esto va para las mamas que nunca se olvidan del valor de cada palabra.

Esto va para las mamas que no dejan de asombrarme con su capacidad de perseverar ... y de querer.

Gingko

There are trees all over the place in memory of my husband. It connects us with nature even more and also with him. I really never understood the meaning or feeling of having a living being in memory of someone until these past years. These trees have helped us connect with him, with his memory with his passion for plants and nature and even if we are far away from those trees, there are ways to keep on watching them, to keep connected with them. I am so glad we got this ginkgo here, it is like having roots of our memories of him in the new place where we live.

Hay árboles por todos lados en memoria de mi marido. Nos conecta con la naturaleza aún más y también con él. Nunca he entendido realmente el significado o la sensación de tener un ser vivo en la memoria de alguien hasta estos últimos años. Estos árboles nos han ayudado a conectar con él, con su memoria, con su pasión por las plantas y la naturaleza e incluso estando lejos de los árboles, hay maneras de seguir viéndolos, para mantenerse conectados con ellos. Estoy muy contenta de que hayamos recibido este ginko aquí, es como tener las raíces de nuestros recuerdos de él en el nuevo lugar donde vivimos.

lemon bread

I finally made the lemon bread that I talked about earlier. The looks are wonderful (although my pictures didn't come out all that great as I took the pictures with low light). I had several problems with it though. First of all, the curd that I made was not very solid, it was more in the liquid side...so when I spread it in the dough it started slipping away...and as you let it rise for 45 min after that, most of it came out... sooo it lost some of the lemon flavor... but I think the dough flavor was still good. I loved making the braid, it is really easy and it looks so nice... I got the recipe from here.

Finalmente hice el pan de limón que he hablado antes. Las pintas son maravillosas (aunque mis fotos no salieron muy bien ya que tomé las fotos con poca luz). Sin embargo, tuve varios problemas con él. En primer lugar, la cuajada que hice no era muy sólida, mas bien líquida... así que cuando la extendi en la masa empezó a salirse... y como se deja subir 45 minutos mas, la mayor parte se escurrió... asi que perdió parte del sabor del limón... pero creo que el sabor de la masa era buena. Me encantó hacer la trenza, es muy sencilla y se ve tan bonita... Saque la receta de aquí

In Florida we had several memorials for my husband, including the planting of several ginkgo trees. Since we met in Japan and there were so many beautiful ginkgos there, we had used that ginkgo leaf as a symbol for our wedding invitations and now to remember him. Here in St Louis, I received a present last December for my wedding anniversary, a ginkgo tree in memory of my husband in a beautiful park around here. The notice that the tree was planted arrived today. For some reason it makes me happy and sad, as usual. Can't wait to go and see it.

The spring here was beautiful, the flowers on the trees only lasted 2 weeks though. But now everything is green, the weather is pleasant and all we do is go to the park, play ball, or run or do a picnic, just enjoy the outdoors while it is not too hot.

En Florida tuvimos varios recordatorios para mi marido, con la plantación de varios ginkos. Como nos conocimos en Japón y había ginkos tan bonitos allí, utilizamos la hoja de ginko como un símbolo para las invitaciones de nuestra boda y ahora para recordarle. Aquí en San Luis, recibí un regalo en diciembre por mi aniversario de boda, un ginko plantado en memoria de mi marido en un parque precioso de por aquí. El anuncio de que el árbol fue plantado llegó hoy. Por alguna razón me hace sentir feliz y triste a la vez, como siempre. Tengo unas ganas de verlo...

La primavera aquí fue hermosa, las flores de los árboles sólo duraron 2 semanas sin embargo. Pero ahora todo esta verde, el clima es agradable y todo lo que hacemos es ir al parque, jugar a la pelota, correr o hacer un picnic, simplemente disfrutar del aire libre mientras que no haga demasiado calor.

I haven't had much energy for blogging lately, I guess it's a phase of my life. But I am still baking and making things mostly in the kitchen, and as I get ready to make a lemon bread now, hopefully I will be able to post pictures soon.

No he tenido mucha energía para el blog últimamente, creo que es una etapa de mi vida. Pero todavía estoy haciendo cosas al horno y otras cosas en la cocina, y ahora me estoy preparando para hacer un pan de limón, del que espero poder poner fotos en breve.

More cakes

It looks like the only arts and crafts that I am involved in lately are happening in the kitchen. Luca tells me everyday that he wants a batman cake, even though he already had a batman cake for his birthday (I am guessing he loved that one). So with the leftover fondant from the other cake I decided to make him a little cake with a new chocolate recipe I got from a book from the library. The cake tastes really good although since I am not crazy about chocolate, I like it with something soft and sweet like whipped cream on top. It is delicious like that!
I also made a asparagus recipe from a book that my mom gave me a long time ago that belonged to her. The problem I had with this one is that I should have cooked the pastry first because it was not cooked all the way where the filling was sitting. The recipe didn't call for precooking the dough and that's why I didn't do it but lesson learned, I will do it regardless next time. It tasted really good though.


Parece que las unicas artes y manualidades a los que me dedico últimamente se están produciendo en la cocina. Luca me dice todos los días que quiere una tarta de batman, a pesar de que ya hice una para su cumpleaños (supongo que le gusto). Así, con el fondant sobrante de la otra tarta decidí hacerle una tartita con una receta de chocolate que leí en un libro de la biblioteca. El bizcocho de sabor esta muy bueno, aunque como a mi no me encanta el chocolate, me gusta con algo suave y dulce como la nata montada por encima. Esta riquisimo asi!
También hice una receta de espárragos de un libro que mi madre me dio hace mucho tiempo que era de ella. El problema que tuve es que debi haber cocinado la masa primero porque no se cocinó del todo por la parte donde estaba el relleno. La receta no decia que se precocinara la masa y por eso no lo hice, pero aprendi la lección, lo haré la próxima vez. Por lo menos sabía muy bien.

Yes! Our cake, the scorpion won our little homemade contest. It was fun making it and we all learned a lot. We got motivated to make more (I have to mini loafs in the oven right now) and we look at cakes with different eyes from now on.
I will post more about the making of the cake soon. For now, that is my favorite picture.

Si!! Nuestra tarta, el escorpion gano nuestro pequenho concurso hecho en casa. Lo pasamos bien y aprendimos mucho, Nos motivo a hacer mas (tengo dos mini bizcochos en el horno ahora mismo) y ahora miramos a las tartas con otros ojos. Pondre mas fotos de como lo hicimos pronto. We are all here waiting for the very much wanted final verdict of the cake challenge. We will have one tonight, and then, I will post more pictures about it. In the meantime, I will show some pictures of my latest gardening project. I decided that with this wonderful weather, my patio needed a better use and needed some plants. I took most of my indoor plants out and I can see them growing already. I also bought 3 little plants and a pot to make a mixed pot with Luca. We had fun making it and it looks really nice. We enjoy this patio sooo much that we have dinner out there every night. We need to get some decent furniture so that we can enjoy it even more. Has spring inspired you to do some gardening??

Mientras tanto, voy a mostrar algunas fotos de mi último proyecto de jardinería. Decidí que con este clima maravilloso, mi patio necesita ser mejor aprovechado y necesita unas cuantas plantas. Saque casi todas la plantas del interior afuera y veo que ya estan creciendo. También compré 3 plantas y una maceta para hacer una maceta variada con Luca. Nos divertimos haciéndolo y esta muy bonita. Disfrutamos de este patio taaaanto que cenamos ahí todas las noches. Tenemos que conseguir unos muebles decentes para poder disfrutarlo aún más. One hundred and eight years ago my grandmother was born. She was a wonderful woman and raised 6 children and had many grandchildren. We were lucky to spend the last decades of her life close to her. She was a strong, funny, smart, good woman and I miss her very much. With the wonderful technology of nowadays, I have a recording of a funny conversation we had with her in one of her latests Christmas, it is nice to hear her voice. I feel that my brain can't keep up with everything and as time goes by, I forget things, and I am scared to forget the sound and even how the faces and expressions were of those who we loved and have already left this world. One of these days I will organize many records I have to remember them so that Luca can have the feeling that he was also there when all of those moments recorded happened.

Hace ciento ocho años que mi abuela nacio. Era una mujer maravillosa que crio a 6 hijos y tenía muchos nietos. Tuvimos la suerte de pasar las últimas décadas de su vida cerca de ella. Era una mujer fuerte, divertida, inteligente, buena y yo la echo mucho de menos. Con la maravillosa tecnología de hoy en día, tengo una grabación de una conversación muy divertida que tuvimos con ella en una de sus ultimas Navidades, me encanta oír su voz. Siento que mi cerebro no puede mantenerse al día con todo y con el paso del tiempo, me olvido de las cosas, y tengo miedo de olvidar el sonido e incluso cómo eran las caras y las expresiones de nuestros seres queridos que ya han dejado este mundo. Un día de estos voy a organizar muchos archivos que tengo para recordarlos y para que Luca pueda tener la sensación de que él también estaba allí cuando todos esos momentos grabados sucedieron.

Cake challenge: fondant and critters

The critter cakes are out!!! Which one of all is more amazing! Many of these people have never made a fondant cake before and we made the fondant from marshmallows, and still they came out with these amazing and detailed creations!!!! It is so rewarding after all the stress of making the cake, thinking about what to make, finding materials and then solving little hurdles on the process...and of course we are getting better at it and learning a lot from the experience. Enjoy the beautiful pictures, I will unveil the winner later on and then our creation (I had two friends making my cake with me).

Y ya tenemos las tartas de bichos!!! Cual de ellos es mas increible! Muchas de estas personas nunca han hecho una tarta de fondant en su vida, e hicimos el fondant de nubecitas, y aun asi consiguieron estas creaciones tan chulas y con tanto detalle!!! Da un gusto despues de todo el estres de hacer una tarta, de pensar en que hacer, de encontrar los materiales y de resolcer pequenhos problemillas en el proceso...y claro esta que estamos mejorando y aprendiendo de la experiencia. Disfrutad de las fotos tan bonitas, revelare el ganados en unos dias y nuestra propia creacion (dos de mis amigas me ayudaron a hacer la tarta).

Back to steady?

This past month has been crazy. Crazy in the sense of out of the ordinary, lots of wonderful visitors, lots of wonderful visit, and no much time to have our regular lives in St Louis. I came back this month, a year older and with a renewed and rested spirit, to get into a cake making marathon. I mean, I even had dreams about it earlier this week (or should I say nightmares?. Anyways, it turned out a busy week of thinking, preparing and making a cake that will be part of our international challenge number two: fondant...bugs or critters are the theme...I was lucky to have good company and lots of help. Two of my friends here in St Louis wanted to learn how to make a cake out of marshmallow fondant and we got together to make it. It would have been hard to make without them, so much more fun and entertaining with them! Thank you girls! Our minds and hands working together make a great team! But I am not going to show that cake today, it will be judged early next week so then I will show all the cakes. I think we have made 8 o 9 cakes total between US, Spain and Sweden. I can't wait to see what the others made...

Este último mes ha sido una locura. Loco en el sentido de fuera de lo normal, hemos tenido muchos visitantes super, un montón de visitas por ahi, y no hay tiempo de seguir una vida normal aqui en San Luis. Volví este mes, un año mayor y con un espíritu renovado y descansado, para entrar en la maratón del concurso de pasteles.
es decir, que incluso tuve sueños sobre la tarta dichosa a principios de esta semana (o debería decir pesadillas?). De todos modos, resultó una semana muy ocupada pensando, preparando y haciendo un pastel que sera parte de nuestro concurso internacional de tartas número dos: ... fondant: insectos o bichos son el tema ... Tuve la suerte de tener buena compañía y mucha ayuda. Dos de mis amigas aquí en San Luis querían aprender a hacer un pastel de fondant de nubecitas y nos reunimos para hacerlo. Hubiera sido difícil hacerlo sin ellas, ha sido mucho más divertido y entretenido con ellas! Gracias chicas! Nuestras mentes y manos trabajando juntas hacen un gran equipo! Pero yo no voy a ensenhar la tarta hoy, será evaluada a principios la próxima semana y, lo que hare sera poner una foto de todas las tartas del concurso. Creo que hemos hecho 8 o 9 tartas (o estamos en ellos) total entre EE.UU., España y Suecia. Tengo unas ganas de ver lo que las demas hicieron ...

One year older

The way I see birthdays nowadays is very different from the way I used to see them just 4 years ago. I celebrate birthdays with happiness to know that I am still here, that I am lucky to have one more to enjoy with my little boy and with the people I care about. I am two years older than my husband ever was. That's how I measure my age. If only he could be here too to celebrate with us...

Como veo los cumpleaños hoy, es muy diferente de la manera en que yo los veía hace apenas 4 años. Celebro los cumpleaños con la alegría de saber que aún estoy aquí, que tengo la suerte de tener uno más para disfrutar con mi chiquitin y con la gente que me importa. Tengo dos años más que los que mi marido llego a tener. Asi es como mido mi edad. Ojala el pudiera estar aquí también para celebrarlo con nosotros ...

Slow but sweet

This blog is going in slow motion...I have been traveling, having lots of good company around, having a busy life and with a broken camera, so I have parked this blog a bit. We are enjoying Easter with our family and it is a good time to rest, eat well and enjoy the wonderful beginning of Spring.
We are getting ready for our second cake challenge. During these weeks I have had the oportunity to read more, practice more with my sister and get ready to make a fondant cake next week! I will have two helpers who want to learn how to make fondant cakes too and I need to make a plan so that not only we have fun in the process, but we also have a delicious and beautiful cake. Wish me luck...

Este blog va a cámara lenta ... he estado viajando, con un montón de buena compañía alrededor,he estado muy ocupada y mi camara se ha roto, así que he aparcado este blog un poco. Estamos disfrutando de la Semana Santa con con nuestra familia y es un buen momento para descansar, comer bien y disfrutar del maravilloso comienzo de la primavera.
Nos estamos preparando para nuestro reto de la segunda tarta. Durante estas semanas he tenido la oportunidad de leer más, practicar más con mi hermana y prepararme para hacer un pastel de pasta de azúcar (fondant) la próxima semana! Voy a tener dos ayudantes que quieren aprender a hacer pasteles de pasta de azucar y necesito hacer un plan para que no sólo nos divertimos en el proceso, pero también nos salga un pastel delicioso y precioso.
